Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys WGA54G Wireless-G Gaming AdapterCustomer Review: So, where's the problem? This is a great product! Summary: 5 Stars
After reading all the horror stories about this product left by other reviewers, I was hesitant to purchase it, even though it seemed on face to be the simplest way to get my ReplayTV on to my existing home network.
After taking a leap of faith based on past experience with Linksys products, I'm glad I did. Setup could not have been simpler. Using my laptop to configure it, I had the adapter running and connected to my Replay in less than 10 minutes. Though my updates run a tiny bit slower than they did when my Replay was hard-wired, they're still plenty fast, and of course (to my wife's relief), I was able to get rid of the cable running across my living room. I tested it this morning on my PS2, and results were great there, too.
And, as was the case when I set up my network last summer, calls to Linksys were handled quickly and professionally, without any rushing despite my picking the brains of the folks with whom I spoke. Do be aware that Linksys has shipped support overseas. Communication was strained at times, but much less so than what I've experienced with Dell's overseas support agents.
And if you call sales or customer service, you can ask for escalation on specific issues, at which point you'll receive a call from a domestic agent (as I did, and that agent was INCREDIBLY helpful, helping me troubleshoot numerous issues and plan the next phases of my network, even though that wasn't what I originally called about).
So, great product, reasonable price, easy setup (assuming you've got your network properly configured in the first place), top-notch support...what's not to like? For less than a hundred bucks, I absolutely love this device--just like all my other Linksys components.
Customer Review: DirecTV Video On Demand Summary: 5 Stars
I just purchased this today and won't receive it until Friday. I am hoping that this adapter has the CAT5 connector on the end, I read the product description but didn't find anything stating whether it was USB or CAT5. My DirecTV only works with a CAT5, the USB is still not available. DirecTV now has for free Video On Demand (VOD) starting with channel 1000. So if USA is channel 245 on DirecTV then 1245 will be the DirecTV VOD. When I get this I hope it's compatible with my 2WIRE QWEST modem because I am running a wireless network I need for this adapter to work with my wireless modem. Once I have my VOD hooked up and hopefully running well I will post another review or update to let you know if this works for the DirecTV VOD service. The price I paid here is the same as Newegg and a couple other places but with Amazon my shipping was free. Keeping my fingers crossed! Well I have owned it now for two weeks and it works great picking up my neighbors wireless connection but not mine. I ran the setup disk (first mistake) and tried to get it to download my DirecTV VOD but it just doesn't want to seem to work on my network, I would make sure before you buy this that you have more knowledge about wireless networks than the average user because I can't get mine to work, the lights come on and it says its working but it's not, oh well.
UPDATE January 11, 2009
Forgot that I had written this review. I received this item, it has a CAT5 connection, I hooked it up to my DIRECTV and now receive Video On Demand and it works great with my wireless network modem from QWEST. I highly recommend this item if you want to use the VOD on DIRECTV
Customer Review: Easy Setup for me... Summary: 5 Stars
Well, I bought this item for my Xbox prior to reading all of the troubles most seem to have. My brother, who builds computers, as a side job, recommended the Linksys to me b/c he said they are the leader in wireless internet blah blah. (I am no computer whiz by any means) Anyhow, after I ordered it (from another company online), I then decided to check out the reviews on Amazon (I know, I worked backwards on this)...but I definately got worried after reading all the difficulty most have. But too late, item was shipped. Upon recieving, I hooked it up to my ROUTER (not computer as the instruction sheet said to) (my router is a Linksys G (not sure model #), then plugged it in the outlet, and ran the setup disk. That took about 2 or 3 minutes. Then I unhooked it and took it to my Xbox which is in the next room, about 25' from the computer, seperated by a wall. I hooked it up to my Xbox and plugged it in and was up and running. Total time it took me to finally play someone online was about 15 to 20 minutes, b/c all of the inputing you have to do to set up online with the Xbox. So, for me, it works great, no problems. Only gripe is, this unit runs HOT. Hope that doesn't cause any longevity issues.
Customer Review: Flawless with my Xbox 360 and PS3 Summary: 5 Stars
I received this product ahead of schedule and was very skeptic about trying this with all these negative reviews. I was very timid with all configuring that had to be done and was hoping i did it right. Its very simple, type the name of your router, your security type, and the password or passkey and thats it. Save your configuration and plug it in and you are connected. This took me a whole 10 minutes or less to get connected. I bought an Y Ethernet adapter which turns one port into 2 and i plugged my PS3(20GB) and Xbox 360 to this single unit and it worked perfectly. This is a life saver since my PS3 didn't have a built in WIFI adapter and i didn't want to buy the dedicated Xbox 360 wireless adapter for 30 dollars more than this unit and it only worked for the Xbox.
Conclusion:
This unit saved me some money and helped get both my systems online without any hassle. I would recommend this to anyone who is in the same boat as i am and is looking to save some money.
If any questions, leave a comment, I'll try to answer.
Customer Review: Works Great With the Xbox 360! Summary: 5 Stars
I noticed a mixture of negative and positive reviews about this product, and I was hesitant. The purpose that I got this Linksys WGA54G Wireless-G Gaming Adapter was so that I could connect to Xbox Live with my Xbox 360. Thankfully, there were already positive reviews left by people who got this product for the same reason.
All I did was plugged this into a power socket and plugged the ethernet cord, that came with it, into my Xbox 360. Needless to say, all I had to do to get set up with Xbox Live was to turn on my Xbox and search for my router (I use a Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router). It came with a CD, but I had no use for it. Other than searching for my router, there was no tedious setup. Total setup took about 5 seconds and I was connected to Xbox Live.
I chose to go with a refurbished product to save myself 50% on this item. I bought it from netdirectbargains and I'm glad I did. Great product. Great buy. No hassle. If you're looking to get this for your Xbox 360, I highly recommend it.
