Linksys USB200M EtherFast USB 2.0 10/100 Network Adapter is simple and gets the job done.
Customer Review: Works but not too great Summary: 3 Stars
I needed a ethernet adapter for my old laptop and this one has given me just that. A few of things to remember:
1. I have used it with a USB 1.1 and a USB 2.0 ports with no perceivable difference. What might matter is that most NIC's are gigabit in nature and it might not make sense to buy a 100Mbps NIC these days.
2. It is fragile - I havent broken anything yet but the jack where the ethernet cable goes into it certainly is a receipe for disaster.
3. Use the USB extender cable provided if nothing else to save the adapter from getting damaged and to ensure the ethernet cable gets the correct direction to latch on to it.
Last but not the least "do not use it to transfer very large volume of data for long duration". I transfered 2GB of data from my laptop to my desktop and managed to crash Windows XP quite a few times. I know Windows shouldnt be a benchmark for reliability but plugging it on my Debian installation told me what is going on. On bootup and over sustained heavy network load it starts throwing up the message "usb 1-1: bulk timeout on ep1in". Alittle research on google got me the fact that the USB implementation is wrongly done in quite a few hardware out there in the market. Basically on heavy load most of these hardware will refuse to take other USB interrupts. My debian installation has till now not barfed on it but I can understand why Windows XP didnt like it when I tried to transfer 2GB of data through it.
Bottom line is it is usable for low traffic but dont think of doing voluminous data transfer over long period of time. I have kept it running at 10Mbps for a month without a problem.
*UPDATE* I have managed to snap off the point where the cable connects tothe jack. My revised recommendation donot go for this product get something which has a sturdy connector.
Customer Review: Amazon currently shipping v2.1 - Works with Tivo 8.1a Software Summary: 3 Stars
I decided to move from a wireless Linksys device to a wired Ethernet adapter to improve the speed of TiVo transfers to my PC. I decided to go with the Linksys device over other, more sturdy choices in TiVo's "potentially supported" list since it was recommended and sold by TiVo. I was concerned initially that this would not work since Amazon is shipping version 2.1, and TiVo only claims to fully support version 2.0 of this adapter. That said, I had no issues connecting to the TiVo service running version 8.1a of TiVo's software.
As other reviewers have stated, the design of this device is pretty poor, but it is fine for something stationary like a TiVo. I definitely wouldn't carry it in my laptop bag nor would I purchase it if I had to plug and unplug a cable on a regular basis due to the 45 degree angle that the cable must maintain to connect to the device.
I give it three stars overall since the use is limited, but would rate it 4 stars for use with a TiVo Series 2 device.
Customer Review: Good for what it is Summary: 3 Stars
Yes, what others say is true. The door will break, eventually. I have had mine for 3 years and the door has just came off, but I was able to snap it back in place. It is loose though. As for holding the cable securly, I have never had the problem of it comeing loose, when the door was completely intact.
So the bottom line is: the product works well, but it is not something you will have for "many years to come." It does travel well, though. I have dropped it a couple times and nothing has happened.
Would I buy it again, no. There are other prodcuts available that I believe will work just as good and last longer.
Customer Review: Don't believe them when they say they have one left! Summary: 3 Stars
I'd love to review this product, but I can't review a product I don't have. When I ordered, the webpage said "hurry, only one left!" so I hurried...
I also ordered a small filler item in order to get over the $25 mark for free shipping.
THE VERY NEXT MORNING, my filler item was here!
Unfortunately, my network adapter wasn't (and still isn't, over a week later). But they are STILL claiming to have only one left. LIARS!
So, great, speedy service on shipping the filler item that I don't give a damn about. Too bad they can't be honest about their stock.
