Customer Review: Great TiVo Accessory
Summary: 5 Stars

I read the reviews about people saying that the little door is flimsy and they didn't like it as a laptop accessory, but since I was going to use it for my TiVo Series 2 box and TiVo recommended it I took a deep breath and went for it. Turns out it was a good call. My TiVo is really close to my wireless router, tucked in with my entertainment system components, so I basically made the connections and never have to bother with it again. It doesn't ever get moved or removed, so once it's in place it's good to go. However, if someone actually had to run the ethernet cable some distance from the usb to the router, and ever tripped over the wire or otherwise jilted it, I can see how the little door on the usb would snap and that would be the end of it. What the picture doesn't show very well is that the door isn't just an access point, it's crucial to holding the ethernet cord in place (and at a really weird and fragile angle at that). Without it, the cord wouldn't sit right (or at all really) and you'd be SOL or have to jimmy it with some pretty strong tape. At that point, it wouldn't be worth the trouble, just replace it. Never had any problems with its performance (connects just fine, downloaded an Unbox movie in under an hour) so bottom line--if you're going to plug it in and forget about it, it's a great little product.

Customer Review: Tivo now supports this!
Summary: 5 Stars

I just bought this against all the other reviews that Tivo doesn't support version 2. But on Tivo's website, they state they're planning to release a new version of their software in March that WILL support version 2 of this adapter, and you can request this software earlier than the roll out date in March here: http://research.tivo.com/wired/.
I followed all the steps, got the update just yesterday (2/26/2006), plugged in the adapter, hooked it all up and it works perfectly fine.
This product is a nifty thing, very small and compact and easy to use. I noticed a couple of things, the cover for the USB slot seems to be on a bit tight, it was hard for me to pull it off, but nothing broke after I finally did get it off, perhaps it was just my particular piece. Also, I can see how the small door could be easy to break off, does look a bit fragile and easy to break. I had some trouble sticking the Ethernet cord in, it does in at a bit of an awkward 45 degree angle, but after I realized that it went in well.
So, Tivo does support this now! and it works great, just transfered some movie files over using the adapter, much more reliable than my wireless adapter I had used before!

Customer Review: Nice.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have one of the older USB 1.0 adapters in my computer junk drawer (a collection of adapters, plugs, gender changers, card readers & cables....sounds a bit like a circus side show but it never fails me!) and have found it useful on several occasions, but this 2.0 model is in daily service on a network server. Basically, you can plug your ethernet cable into the adapter and then insert the plug end into any USB receptacle (2.0 or 1.1) on your machine (such as on a laptop or a TIVO, etc.). Its purpose is to make buying and installing an ethernet card unnecessary. It has connection & data transfer LEDs to tell you you've contacted the network, though these are not really necessary. No set up is required either, just plug and go on Windows XP.
As far as I can see, the connection is quite as stable as any hard wired to an internal ethernet card, and as it's a true 2.0-compliant adapter, transfer speeds are awesome. In daily use on our network it has performed flawlessly.

Customer Review: Works Great For Me
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought it at Circuit City, where it costs a little more. My ethernet card in my computer has never worked, so I've just connected to my cable modem with a USB cable (the cable modem has both USB and ethernet outputs). Well, we recently got a wireless notebook computer and we wanted a wireless router, but all outputs on the back of most routers are ethernet. I bought this ethernet to USB adapter for my desktop PC to run through the router. No problem at all. The driver was easy to install, and the thing works like a charm - an ethernet cable goes into this, then this goes into a USB port on my computer. I give it five stars.

Also, though the product picture doesn't indicate it, they give you about a 4" or 5" USB cable to run from your computer to the adapter, in case space is tight and you can't run the adapter straight into the back of your computer where it would stick out a couple of inches.

Customer Review: Great little accessory
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this adapter for use with my Sony VAIO subnotebook that unfortunately sacrificed an Ethernet jack for size constraints. Installation was a breeze, and after driver installation Windows 2000 picked up on the USB200M and I was on the Internet. Included in the box is a 4-inch USB cable extender you can use to place the adapter away from the computer. I would recommend using this, since when the adapter is plugged directly into the computer it puts quite a bit of strain on the USB port due to 2 inches of hardware sticking out and the Ethernet cord tension. It's inexpensive, does its job well, and looks pretty snazzy to boot.
