Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cisco-Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless-B Cable/DSL Router

Customer Review: Easy to setup and works great!
Summary: 5 Stars

We had the Linksys Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router installed, setup and working within an hour. The hardest work was moving a computer desk to get to the cabling. Once that was done, configuring the router was a snap for both a PC and a laptop (with different operating systems) to share a common high-speed internet connection. Now, the laptop can be taken to any room in the house and be connected to the internet without worrying about cabling or dialing up. The PC can also be on the internet simultaneously with no noticeable, significant reduction in internet access speed. (The PC is wired directly to the router instead of using a wireless connection.)

If you plan to get a wireless router, you want to make sure to setup enough security protection within the network to prevent nearby strangers from gaining access to your wireless network. With the Linksys Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router, you tell it how many computers will have access to the network and configure any PC's or laptops on wireless connections to have the correct encryption. We noticed that incresing the level of security a lot slowed the wireless connection significantly. That's the only signficant drawback that we have seen.

Also, from a coworker who tried this: if you plan to use the Linksys Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router within close proximity to where other similar, non-Linksys wireless networks are already in use, the Linksys Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router may interfere with the non-Linksys wireless networks.

Customer Review: Still Going Strong after 4+ Years, Love It
Summary: 5 Stars

I guess everyone has their own story regarding any product. This is the first wireless router we purchased years ago instead of buy or renting one from our cable company. Out of the box we just followed the directions and it was easy and painless. Lived in a pretty desolate area but still got excellent reception. Used/still use it on our desktop and 2 laptops. Now live in a residential area on the other coast, new cable company, newly setting up our computer system. Came to setting up our Lynksis was as easy as it was the first time. We never had one problem with our system. We aren't techies or computer masters, just two women who wanted to get on the internet. It was, again, easy. We are going to upgrade our system now because we have a much faster connection with our cable company, we pay extra for that. Our Lynksis worked perfectly okay with this new cable company, we are just upgrading to be able to go a little faster. There is NOTHING wrong with our system. Really couldn't be happier. Are going with the same brand, maybe the "G" model or the "G model with Speed Booster." We will probably end up giving our old system to someone who needs it because it still works perfectly. That's about it. I have no horror stories, not one and believe me when I buy something and it doesn't work like the place said it works, be it computer wireless routers or a washing machine, I insist on getting exactly what was advertised by the company and I growl and am impatient. Love this system.

Customer Review: I'm FREEEEEE!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Previous to this purchase I was taking the cheap route of dragging a 50 ft Belkin cable around the house with my laptop. Prices are now so low on wireless routers it made sense to replace my old Linksys router. This router is even easier to set up then my old Linksys. Basically its plug and play. It automatically found out my IP address and worked as soon as I plugged it in and turned it on. I did enter the DNS server address manually. I am using this router with a Netgear MA401 802.11b Wireless PC Card because it has better reviews then the Linksys wireless card.

I am in a split level 2000 sq foot house. My router is upstairs in a front bedroom. I have an excellent signal downstairs and in my back yard a fair signal. But, I noticed no degradation in surfing with a "fair" signal. There is a refrigerator in direct line where I get the fair signal and is probably the culprit. So, if you have a small, medium sized home you will most likely have great performance. The "fair" signal in the back yard doesn't seem to make any difference so this setup might even work good in a larger house. Just make sure you set up the WEP encripted security so your neighbors don't use your Internet access. That is easy too to set up!!! The only downside was my laptop battery died and I have to buy a new one. :-]

UPDATE 6/08 I have now gone through 2 or 3 Linksys routers. They seem to die at about 2-3 years old. I am now using a relatively inexpensive Belkin router.

Customer Review: Great product
Summary: 5 Stars

I had lots of trepedation about embarking on the wireless journey; these things never seem to go well the first time, and I was pretty sure the thing would have me rolling around on the floor trying to strangle its in 10 minutes. And I sure did not want to call cus support because we all know how that is these days.
Surprise! I read the instructions and hooked up to my cable modem (ATT Broadband) and it worked immediatly, no worries, and I didn't even end up having to configure anything. This feature might be unique to ATT Broadband, but their network apparently recognizes a new node as soon as it appears.
I also bought two wireless cards for two laptops. And here is my word of warning, mirroring the review below: The two boxes containing the cards were virtually identical, but one was Version 1, and the other Version 2. The V2 installed immediatly with no fuss and was working in less then a minute; the V1 was more of a struggle and required a few reboots; it has since been fine, but it seems slower, and I would highly recommend insisting on the V2 card and router.

Lastly, my performance has been fantastic, but you might want to hold off and wait to see some reviews for the new 802.11 wireless version, as it can flow 54MB compared to this system's 11MB. But in my case, everything already runs like lightning, so I have no intention of upgrading for quite some time. Highly recommended, especially if you have ATT Broadband (no muss, no fuss).

Customer Review: Awesome Wireless Router/Access Point
Summary: 5 Stars

This router/AP is the best value out there. I installed and configured it in 3 minutes on my win2000 desktop using the CD that basically configured the router for me based on my cable/modem and connection to Cox cable. I spent another 2 minutes configuring my laptop using the Linksys WPC11. Then I took the laptop to the basement (other end of the house, several 40 years old plaster walls away) and used the wireless configuration utility of WPC11 to show an "excellent" link quality and signal strength! Then I started moving around the yard (0.75 acre lot) and walked all the way to the mailbox and still was surfing at high speed! :) It showed 100% link strength all over the 1st floor of the house(rambler). No problems, installed 2 computers in 5 minutes, it costs only ...and WPC11 ... Plus it looks great and has a small footprint. It was my first networking experience and Linksys hooked me as a loyal customer for life. Later on I decided to share my printer between the desktop and the laptop and the Linksys web site had a link explaining exactly what to do for both my win2000 desktop and my win98 laptop. Impressive!! Took 5 minutes to setup file and printer sharing. Also I added WEP 128 bit encryption for security in 1 minute. This review is for version 2 of the Wireless router/Access point and version 3 of the WPC11 card. I was so impressed I decided to write this first review of my life to share my wonderful experience :):):) Thank you Linksys!
