I purchased 2 LaCie drives to transport with me on deejay jobs to support my music library on my Apple. I enjoyed using these drives so much that I purchased this particular unit to use with my Vista machine. Note: be sure to order the
"LaCie 301371 500GB Rugged All-Terrain FireWire 800/ FireWire 400/USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive." A much better deal if your computer supports firewire.
I mistakenly thought this paticular LaCie had the Firewire connections---it only has USB 2.0, so downloading information on to this drive runs very slow. Spend the little extra for the firewire speed----Please note: First, check your Windows laptop to make certain that there are supports for Firewire. Some laptops Do Not support Firewire.

I've had this drive for about a year now. Been using it for backups, no problems.
However, if I remember right the data backup software for Windows that comes with the drive isn't worth using. Not only that, I think the backup software might have installed some bloatware with it that automatically searches for updates for all of your installed software. I didn't notice this until I saw it in my add/remove programs list or my control panel. So you might want to check for this if you've installed the backup software on Windows. Regardless of whether or not the bloatware came from it, though, the backup software is still not worth using.

I love the rugged la cie. Its worked well so far, and the transfer times are pretty good for a portable HD. However, READ THE FINE PRINT! Though La Cie is a company geared toward Macs, their free online backup for a year inexplicably only works for Windows! This was one of the reasons I chose this product in the first place, but since I have a Mac its worthless. Yes, I am to blame for not reading the fine print, but still....La Cie caters to Macs. It seemed great at first but then it began to freeze and at times when I plugged it in to the computer,it took a while for the computer to detect it. It also takes forever to eject in windows and for Mac computers it has very little memory, I don't know if my harddrive was detective but I wasnt entirely pleased wig this item, I give it a 6 out of ten.
