Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LaCie Rugged All-Terrain 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive 301370Customer Review: LaCie 500 GB External Hard Drive Summary: 5 Stars
Overall, the hard drive is great! I'm not so impressed with the design, but then again it was made "ruggedized" so I can't complain. The transfer speeds are not optimal, but for a 5400rpm drive it still clips along at a pretty good pace. Expect a good amount of waiting time to transfer large amounts of data (i.e. folders of documents, music, videos) that are around 10-20 GB in size. However, as long as you have the time to spare, it's worth it because this drive is reliable! I have not had any errors or hardware malfunctions with the drive to date(5 months). As far as small transfers go, they fly by in seconds as should be expected. I'd highly recommend this drive to anyone that simply wants to back up their data and ensure it's safe and won't be lost. I haven't tested the dropping distance yet and don't intend to, but I'm sure their specs aren't far off. Having the drive be powered by USB is great as I never have to use any external power sources. And if your computer does not have enough power to run the drive, you can simply use the extra USB power cord and plug it into a second USB port to supply enough power to the drive. Overall- GREAT BUY! Cheap, reliable, and pretty fast!
Customer Review: It works Summary: 5 Stars
I'm only storing photos and I've only had it a month. I'm sure it's not the fastest unit out there and I'm sure it's not the slowest either. But it's relatively inexpensive. I like that it's more durable than some other products like it. It's compact, easy to start-up, and easy to use. It requires two USB ports (one to power the unit and one to transfer info) so you may have to unplug other USB devices if your computer doesn't have enough ports.
Customer Review: Great External for a rugged computer user Summary: 5 Stars
The hard casing and rubber lining on the hard drive is great for travel. you can also buy a extra external case for extra protection if you wish. it has great write speed, doesn't need an external power source, and with 500 GB is able to back up everything needed for everyday use. i recommend when you first plug it in to go through the setup wizard. really helps and all you get is one chance so if you don't the first time you don't at all.
Customer Review: Rubber Baby-Buggy Bumbers Summary: 5 Stars
Think Portable HDD with bumpers and you have the basic concept here. When I first looked at it I was somewhat put off by the fact that I might have to use 2 0f my USB ports....but it works fine with one plug-in.
There isn't much to say about a product that does the job it's expected to do. It does it well.
Customer Review: it finally works Summary: 5 Stars
i bought this because all the photo assistants seem to have one. that means it must be good and sturdy as those dudes are tech heads. it looks a little clunky, but i just want something that works. it works well with my macbook, but would not initialize with the tower i use at work. that was pretty frustrating.
