Bought this hard drive when I noticed they use them in the Apple store's Genius Bar and are always banging them around. I figured they must be pretty sturdy for as much use as they get there. I am very happy with it so far but I have only had it a few weeks.
Oh, just a note. The firewire 800's speed is amazing. I am very pleased with it.

I own 4 of these drives (Firewire 800/400 versions) which I use primarily for on-site back-up of digital photography shoots. I'm a working pro so I need fast, reliable drives to store hundreds of gigabytes of very important files. The LaCie Ruggeds have been perfect for the task with no issues. This is one of the best portable hard drives I have used. First of all it is very sturdy and well made, but it also takes, firewire 400, 800 or USB 2.0, which is great when you sharing information among various computers with various connections. It has very fast rate of transfer and at 500 GB, is plenty of space for most peoples needs.Customer Review: Great hard drive!

I have used this type of drive in many of the companies I have worked in. When it came time to get another external hard drive, this one was my immediate choice. This hard drive works well and works fast. I use it to back up photo files when traveling. The orange bumper around the exterior does increase the size and make the device less portable. I trust that the bumpers make the drive durable in the event that it is dropped. I hope that I do not perform this test!
