I've been using this drive for several weeks now, both as a storage spot for video, photos, etc. and as a backup drive via OS X Leopard's Time Machine. Works great! I'm very impressed with the transfer speeds. Also, even after reading the specs I was blown away when I received the box... This thing is tiny! I was amazed at how light yet durable this hard drive is. Love the size and portability--perfect for a student like me who is always moving around and has a lot of important stuff to store. The fact that it has so many choices-- usb, two firewires, etc. makes it really versatile. The FW 800 makes it really fast--able to backup my entire mac using time machine in only 30 minutes...impressive. LaCie is a great company. This is a big drive with a small form factor. It is also very stable. This drive supports the 3 most popular methods of interface, USB/FireWire 400/800. A Mac and PC user needs all three to be most efficient. None of the 3 ports require wall power or secondary power to spin the drive. Who could ask for anything more? The drive was purchased as a gift. Key features were ruggedness, 800MB Firewire and 500GB size. Although the drive arrived on time, the shipping container sustained major damage in shipping (including crushing part of the LaCie product box.) I have had the drive for for less than one week but on day one I copied 100 GB of video files to the drive. It was quick using the FireWire 800 cable. The drive seems to be very sturdy and well built. I like it much better than the Western Digital Passport drives that I have used in the past. I have had 3 out of 5 WD drives fail. I hope that this one will give me better results.
