Although I didn't subject this device to all the environmental catastrophes the manufacturers claim it can endure, it does come with a thick rubber sleeve that should protect it from a fall.
I've been using this USB-powered HD for over a year now, and it's never had a glitch. As far as I can tell, it is well built and reliable. If you are looking for something cheaper, there are plenty of other options out there, but in opting for something that offers a little more physical protection, I have not been disappointed.

so far (6 weeks) my drive is performing with the same excellence as my older model which I have had for 3 years. I needed more space, so purchased the 500G drive. I'm using the firewire 800 cable for this one. Seems speedy. I work directly from the drive on many large Photoshop files as well as all of my other design projects. I transport it everyday from office to home, plugging it in 2-3 times per day. No problems yet. Hopefully it will behave the same as my older model. This hard drive is very small and compact and fits nicely behind my Mac desktop computer. I'm somewhat of a Geek, but my son talked me through installing it in 5 minutes on the phone, it was that easy. Just find whichever cord (4 included) fits your needs, plug it into the back of your computer, and follow the prompts to install the software. It's quiet and I've already forgotten it's there except when my computer tells me it's backing up to it. Glad I got it -- it will hold all my info plus more besides.Customer Review: Easy to use extra storage

We have purchased two of these now of varying capacities and have found to be great and reliable - at least so far! With the fast Firewire 800 connection I have found it ideal for storing my music library. The set-up of the drive was easy and the portability is great. Not having an extra power cord compared to the drives we had previously helps clean up the clutter too! We have also successfully used this with our Time Capsule successfully as extra back-up capacity an a network drive.Customer Review: Fastest Delivery Ever

My review is more about my shopping experience with Amazon. I've had a Lacie 160GB for almost 3 years. No problems at all. I actually bought the Lacie 500GB to replace a Western Digital portable drive which corrupted 4 of my video files. I ordered the Lacie 500GB very late on a Thursday night and received it on that Saturday! I live no where near where it was shipped from. Not only was the product far cheaper than buying it at an Apple Store, but I got free shipping.
