Wow. I can't believe the price of this Lacie has not gone down since the prior year I purchased this item. I particularly bought this because I edit in FCP and needed something reliable and rugged. It boots up without any problem and I cannot even hear that its on. On the other hand, my first external hard drive was a Seagate and it took forever to boot and there was something wrong with the plug that would make the hard drive go on and off. With that nightmare I wanted my next hard drive to be reliable and this Lacie has proved it. I've had it for a year and no problems. I would recommend this Lacie if your out for an external hard drive, get this one!Customer Review: Run over by a truck and still works!

I've enjoyed my drive since the day I started using it. I had purchased it because the reviews of its durability were so positive. After spending years scanning old family photos and storing them on this drive, I was devastated when it got run over by our truck and left in the driveway in the rain overnight. I thought all those years of work were lost. Surprisingly it still works! It mounted without any problems and everything was there. I'll be purchasing another one but plan on keeping this one as an extra backup. If only to prove how rugged it really is. Wonderful device with plug-and-play set-up running Leopard on my MacBook Pro. Exactly as advertised, the Rugged 500GB does indeed play well with Time Machine. Couldn't be happier with the FW 800 transfer rate -- extra zippy and just what you'd hope. Build quality is great for a portable. I ordered LaCie's extra set of colored bumpers as I don't much care for the included orange. CaseLogic's PHDC-1 Small EVA External Hard Drive Case is a *perfect* fit for the Rugged 500GB -- sturdy and snug with no unwonted wiggle-room.
Extra happy with everything, so five stars on all of the above.

I bought LaCie Rugged 500GB for my MacBook Pro. It works great! It's pretty fast, easy to use, very light - easy to carry around, rugged edges protect it well and in general great product for a good price. Had it for about 3 months now and no problems so far! I researched many external hard drives before purchasing this one - couldn't decide between LaCie Rugged and mini G-Drive (I have a big G-Drive and it's a great product, had it for 3 years - it's just a bit big and it's only 250GB)? I think they are both good, mini G-Drive is smaller but also more expensive.Customer Review: aks4u

I think this a great product. I use WD Passport alon with this one and i think this product is in a class of its own.....Worth the extra dollars yu have shell out. It has faster transfer rates than WD Passport 500GB even on USB connection. The fact that it has firewire 800 is just another Bonus.
The built quality is amazing, it feels like it will last forever and the fact that it comes with 3 yrs warranty only helps to reassure the feeling.
The only downside that i can think of is that it is not as sleek as the competition. Overall, its a winner
