Customer Review: Great backup drive
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm a videographer / editor who travels a lot, and I picked up one of these drives to back up my my 500GB G-Drive Mini 500GB G-drive Mini Triple. The G-Drive is great for speed and looking nice, but the LaCie Rugged gives me peace of mind by mirroring the G-Drive every night. I worry about G-Drive getting maimed while bouncing around in my carry-on, but I know that if anything happens to it, my irreplaceable footage is safe on the Rugged.

Just flipping the LaCie Rugged around in your hands gives you a great idea of the durability inside. The rubber bumper protects it from impacts, as does a layer of metal between the drive and the case. There is never any rattling or shifting when you jostle it around. The drive is a little larger than average portable drives, but that's a small price to pay for the knowledge that your data is safe.

Customer Review: LaCie Rugged firewire hard drive
Summary: 5 Stars

If your looking for a self-powered (through firewire/usb) portable hard drive that you can edit off of you should already know you need at least 400 firewire but you can still get drop frames which is what makes this drive so great because it also has 800 firwire conections. Though it is not the most sleak and shinny portable drive out there chances are you wont find more bang for your buck. Considering both 800/400 firewire and usb with 500GB memory for the range of $160-$180 its hard to complain. and though its bulkier than others this ones in it for the long run hense the name rugged. its larger because its more stable and less likely to fail or corrupt a file if droped or tossed around. Bascilly its a whole lot of fast stable memory for a pretty affordable price. i would highly recomend it... ESPECIALLY if you need a portable drive you can edit off of in programs such as final cut pro.

Customer Review: Great little backup drives
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a MacPro that I use for my business which has 4 internal drives. So, I purchased several of these for system backups of each of the internal drives. I use the great "Super Duper" backup program to clone each of the internal drives to one of these external drives. I love that they have FireWire 800 as this makes the backup process that much faster. I have one set of these drives that I keep in a fireproof safe in my office and another set that I keep at my bank in a safe deposit box. I really appreciate the nice big rubber bumper that surrounds these drives to keep it safe while I transport them to and from the bank and my safe. I've had absolutely no problem with these drives. I love these drives.

Customer Review: Compact, Capacious, Fast: A Great External Drive for Work on the Go
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm using this drive as a replacement for a full-size external 500 GB drive and it's excellent! I take this drive everywhere I take my laptop, and the small size and weight and lack of bulky power brick make it MUCH MUCH easier to pack up and tote around. With FireWire and the transfer rate of the 500 GB SATA drive mechanism, I don't notice any performance difference between this and the 3.5" mechanism I was using previously -- something which was definitely not true of the 160 GB USB mobile drive that I last tried this experiment with.

Great product, LaCie! Thanks for making a small hard drive with FireWire. Can't wait to see 1 TB in this form factor.

Customer Review: No Problems Thus Far
Summary: 5 Stars

I got two of these. One for storage of files and the other to use as a scratch disc for video editing. Works great with MacBook Pro and Final Cut. I highly recommend the Caselogic PHDC-1 Small EVA External Hard Drive Case to go with it. I wasn't sure it would be a good fit but it's like the 2 products were made for each other. They are a perfect combination and I have 2 of each.

The only thing is the drive gets pretty hot sometimes. I don't know if this is part of normal operation but I just make sure not to leave the drive in the Caselogic case when I'm using it. I sit it on top so the air can flow all around it. It seems to help with the temperature.
