I bought this drive in November 2008 to connect with an Airport Extreme router, in effect making a "virtual Time Machine." It has been online since then, backing up my Macbook Pro every hour it is on, and being accessed occasionally also for online storage on my network. I'm probably jinxing it (especially reading some of these other reviews) but for me it has been a great investment. Originally bought a Seagate Free Agent (good brand/good product). Wouldn't hook to Mac AirPort Express. Returned through Amazon and got this. Hooked right up fine. Even has ability to break drive into Mac/PC formats, as we have both in the house. Buy a good USB 2.0 cord. Makes a huge difference in speed. Heard mixed reviews on returns through Lacie. Buy through Amazon. They'll stand behind it better than the company and you can simply return it.Customer Review: Fantastic back up system

I recently purchased this through Amazon; received in within four business days which was great. It's easy and simple to use and I would hightly recommend it. I was also especially greatful since a few weeks after I received this item I had to back up all of my computer files due to a virus which infected my computer. I've been using LaCie drives for years. As a photographer, I don't store images on my computer, so I'm using several of the LaCie portable drives to store an assortment of still and video files. I'm using the 1 TB external as a secondary backup. Yes, it looks sharp, but that's not why I bought it. Over the past 25 years I've tried other brands, but I find it easier and more reliable to stick with one proven brand, and for me that's LaCie!Customer Review: Beautiful & solid design

This was purchased as external backup - it's quiet and lovely. The blue LED reflects off the surface (desktop) so you know when it's in use. Easy to use backup software included, but not robust enough for a power user or tech-geek (use cobian!).
The USB cable is kinda short, about 8", so if you're not planning on placing this directly next to or on the box you're backing up plan to purchase or use a different USB cable.
