Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LaCie Hard Disk 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive designed by Neil Poulton 301304UCustomer Review: I have 2 of these stacked. Great performance and looks too! Summary: 5 Stars
I have 2 of these one on top of the other and use them for data storage and system drive backup via Norton Ghost 15. They work great and are reliable, plus LaCie offers a 2 year warranty (does not include data recovery). What sold me on these 2 drives was the LaCie brand and the Samsung drives (HD301SI) that happen to be in these 2 drives.
NOTE: USB 2.0 transfer rate is 480mbps max no matter what brand external drive you might consider. It is a standard for that protocol whether it is a webcam, external drive, whatever..so don't be misled by advertising hype. Everything and anything that is USB 2.0 maxes out at 480mbps.
The styling is just so simple and sooo elegant too. Neil Poulton did a superb job on these drives. Mine are on 24/7 with no heat issues. I did raise the top stacked drive an extra 1/4" with some adhesive 'feet' to ensure adequate ventilation. Neither drive gets hot..just very slightly warm. I like warm. The blue led in the front bottom edge of these drives frankly for me was also a selling point. They look so damn sexy and sleek with the 'piano black' finish and soft blue glow. Not too bright for me even though others have complained.
The great styling, the 2 year warranty, the LaCie respected brand, the Samsung drives, and the cool, sexy blue light sold me. I am not disappointed. If I need more storage I'll get another one, or two, or three..whatever!!!
Customer Review: LaCie 301304U Summary: 5 Stars
I attached this 1-TB USB external drive to my 2.8 ghtz IMac. The setup was a snap, but the included utilities wanted to take the whole drive as a single partition. I used the Mac's disk utilities, and created two partitions. This way, one partition can now be used for Time Machine (which by the way, will keep backing up until the disk is full, then begins deleting the oldest files), and another partition that is used to back up my Linux server.
The rest of the setup was fast. The Mac found the drive quickly, and so did Time Machine. The Time Machine software asked me which partition I wanted to use, and once that was decided on, Time Machine took off, and has been backing up ever since. How simple is that?
Also, most of the specs I read on this drive show a cache of 16 mb, but the drive as delivered, much to my pleasant surprise, has a cache of 32 mb. Even with the USB connection (I think firewire, which is available on some other La Cie drives, is about 15% faster), I found the file transfer time more than acceptable. I have run video from the drive with no issues. Also, I often transfer rather large photo files, and graphic images to and from the drive, and again no issues.
All that being said, for the money, the drive is hard to beat.
Customer Review: Awesome hard drive only one tiney issue but no biggie. Summary: 5 Stars
This is an awesome hard drive but I see on other drives there putting a headphone jack in them also for us to listen to music with. Thats what this hard drive lacks pretty much the only thing it has lacking. If you know how to host your own website you can use your external hard drive and host everything on LaCie EXT HD. Another cool thing is you notice the blue light indicater that tells you when its on. It also tells you when theres activity going on your hard drive. I use this mainly for backing up my cds and movies and theres enough room to host your website. I plan on getting another one when I get my tax return. Just for backup purposes and more space lol. There easy to install and not that many wires if i'm right theres only two wires I could be wrong lol. Anyways if you are on a tight budget this is the hard drive for you. Also keep looking back every other week the price on this hard drive here at amazon keeps jumping around last I look it was down to 98 bucks now its back up. So if you cant afford the extra what 10 bucks for the hard drive come back in a week it might be down or it might be up again who knows.
Customer Review: Love it, would buy another one Summary: 5 Stars
I do alot of video, picture, marketing type stuff for work and many times the files are pretty big. Also, usually I end up with multiple copies or drafts of every project I work on along with multiple versions of all the source files I used to create it. So I bought this drive to store all the content that I need to keep but don't necessary access often, because of this I wanted something pretty cheap, which this is. Setup was non-existent. I took it out of the box, plugged it in, and started dumping files onto it. Couldn't be easier. And I also like the design, its looks good sitting on my desk, its not a boring looking eye-sore like most of them out there (if it were it would be under the desk, not on it). I would have expected this to be much more expensive, and I probably would have still bought it even if it were. I'll probably buy another one when this one fills up, maybe even an extra for the house. This would also be perfect for a HTPC setup where you need extra storage but want something that won't look terrible in your A/V cabinet.
Customer Review: LaCie 1 TB USB 2.0 HD Summary: 5 Stars
The LaCie 1 TB USB 2.0 HD arrived very fast - normal shipping. I orderd this back in June, 2009, but decided to wait a while before reviewing so I could give an accurate assessment of it's performance.
This was my first USB 2.0 external HD. To tell you the truth, I was skeptical about it's speed since my other external HD's are FW 400 & 800. But I bought it mostly to back up files and for archives. Boy . . . was I surprised (and quite pleased.) This HD is as fast as my FW 400 HD's. I never expected that; which means it can be used as a back up start up drive. I've used it to watch movies (DVD VIDEO_TS folders) as well as with audio, MIDI, text and data files. It works flawlessly! It's nice looking and quiet. I give it a 5 star rating. I can't think of any negatives. Of course, it's not as quick (responsive) as a FW 800 Drive - but I never expected it to be. It's easy to set up- just plug in the power cord and the USB cord. For the price it's well worth buying if you're looking for a good HD with a lot of storage (1 TB)
