Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LaCie Hard Disk 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive designed by Neil Poulton 301304UCustomer Review: Excellent backup drive. Small, quiet, reliable, affordable. Buy 3! Summary: 5 Stars
How things have changed. 10 years ago, when I first computerized my music collection, the biggest drive I could get was 160 GB, and it was quite pricey. I need big drives, because all my music is in full length WAV files, which are about 500 MB per CD. So I wound up with a bunch of small drives, and spent a lot of money.
Now, here we are. One TB of storage, for under $70. Wow.
I have a bunch of LaCie D2 drives, and I like them, but these Poulton drives are so much nicer. You can't rack mount them directly, need to put them on a shelf, but that's minor. They're sleek, slender, stylish, quiet and they work.
My earlier drives are Firewire, because I wanted speed to record and process the original files. But I decided to go with USB for these, because they're used for archival backup. The speed is decent, certainly fast enough for backup. For primaries, I'm now switching to a fast RAID array. I love the Poultons for backup, though.
LaCie customer service is excellent in my experience. I had a few of the D2 drives conk out on me, two of them within the first week. I called LaCie and they were great. Replaced them without hesitation. I don't understand how other folks say they had a problem, I found service to be a definite cut above the usual, very polite and responsive.
And look at that price! I'm about to add 3 more of these -- and they're already 40 bucks less than the first six I got.
I buy disks in threes: one for primary, 2 for backup. Murphy's Law dictates that if your primary drive fails, and you've backed up your data and go to replace it, there will be a time when your backup drive fails at exactly the same time. And it will happen at the worst possible time, when your most cherished music and photos are lost. It's already happened to me, and I can tell you it's a pret-ty hairy experience. I took a lonnggg breath, and reached for that third copy in the closet. If it weren't for that extra drive, I'd be on Zoloft or Thorazine to this day. Put it this way: If you lost years of photos and music from a toasted disk, how much would you pay, to anyone, to get it back? Would it be the cost of an extra drive? You bet.
My advice to any and all: DO MULTIPLE BACKUPS! I say, buy 3.
Bottom line, this LaCie external drive is a terrific purchase. Quality made, small with large capacity, and reliable. I have no hesitation getting more, and you needn't either in getting some.

Customer Review: Beauty and brains. Summary: 5 Stars
Who says you can't have both beauty and brains? This Lacie hard drive looks sleek on my computer desk and holds more information than I certainly can. I loved this hard drive so much I purchased a 2TB one about one year after my first. I've owned my 1TB for more than two years now and am loving every byte of it.
Some people may be concerned with fumbling software that auto-starts upon booting -- but not this one. At least, if there was something of the sort, I got rid of it on day one of use. Others may concern themselves with how safe their data is over a long period of time -- I can't speak for anyone who has owned it longer than I have, but for the past year everything has been looking great.
Just about the only thing that bugs me the most is the strong led light under the front of the drive. To some, led lights are appealing and give any device a nice futuristic look. I rarely mind except when I try to go to sleep. I'm not big on lights when I go to bed, so I need to turn it off at night; I'd hate to take away from the aesthetics by covering the led light with some duct tape or something, haha.
Here's a short list of pros and cons:
Pros
-Great design
-Large storage
-No annoying software
-Convenient on/off switch in the back
-Seems very sturdy/durable
Cons
-Requires an AC adapter (I'm moving toward portable drives now)
-Very strong led light in front (I turn off my drive at night)
-Can tend to heat up quite a bit in use
Customer Review: I love LaCie Summary: 5 Stars
This drive seems very nice. I've had it a week. Using it on my iMac Dual Core. Installed right away using the included utility software. Very simple, straightforward. All good.
What is AMAZING is the company that makes this drive.
I also have an 18 month old 500GB Porsche design drive from LaCie. That drive just died, which necessitated the purchase of this new 1TB drive. I have Mozy for offline backup, so I wasn't too too worried about the dead drive.
Because the drive was still under warranty, I thought I'd call LaCie to see what would happen. I did this before I bought the new drive, just to test out what the company was made of. All drives eventually fail, and as I shopped, LaCie seemed unique with its 2 year warranty. I called their USA offices in Oregon. Was on hold for a minute before a very nice rep picked up, got some info from me, and suggested that it might be the power supply (my drive light was flashing alternating red and yellow). After a 12 minute call, I was shipped a new power supply which arrived a week later. All free.
So I plugged my drive into the new power supply, and presto, ALL MY DATA WAS THERE! Since I had 350GB of home videos (personal, irreplaceable stuff), I was ecstatic. Although Mozy has my data, it was going to be a bear to download 350gb of files. Now I don't have to.
The guys from LaCie handled my problem the way I would expect a great company to handle such things. I'm a customer for life.
Customer Review: The best external hard drive I ever owned Summary: 5 Stars
Pros: I ordered this on Amazon and received it within only a couple days. The hard drive looks fantastic and set up was as easy as just plugging it in. The included back up software works quite well for backing up your main hard drive. It runs in the background and saves everything in a compressed dated file in case you need to retrieve it for use later. USB 2.0 is plenty fast for movies or anything else that the average user needs. If you want to play a graphics intense game from your hard drive you should put that on the internal drive or get an exernal that has eSata. Otherwise USB 2.0 works perfectly for playing full dvd-rips and even blu-ray rips. Plus this thing is whisper quiet. If it didn't have the cool little blue light, you probably wouldn't know if it was on.
Cons: Does USB instead of esata count as a con? Just make sure you get what you need. This has worked great for what I wanted. The only real negative is the short usb cord that is included. I had extras but the included one is rather short if that is all you've got. If this is a problem for you, then just shell out for a usb cable as well. They can be found for dirt cheap and having the spare mini cord you get with this has been useful for me with some other things I hook up ;)
Overall: I will buy lacie external hard drives for the rest of my life. One of the best purchases I have made. No joke. I am extremely happy with it and would recommend it to anyone.
Customer Review: EXCELLENT product ,,, EXCELLENT price ,,, AWESOME!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I just purchased and received my ,,, "LaCie 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive, Designed by Neil Poulton 301304".
I am 100% SATISFIED with this product & price. The criticisms "reviews" that I read are all bogus when compared to my machine.
Criticisms such as, paraphrasing, "The USB cable is too short.", "The flimsy plastic case is easily buckled.", "No fan.", "Design 'Label' is unnecessary, flamboyant."
--- The Cable Length is perfect for my Laptop, I can do without more messy and unnecessary cable.
--- My Case is built like a VAULT. It is Extremely STURDY on all sides.
--- Having no noisy and unnecessary fan is ok with me.
--- While I agree any Design Label is unnecessary, please NOTE my label is invisible, transparent, albeit opaque, translucent and mounted on side near the rear, ,,, not a problem, have to look for it.
I have a MacBook Pro and chose, as one reviewer suggested, to not use the Enclosed Software.
I plugged the LaCie into my MacBook Pro and ran the MacBook Pro Disk Utility, formatting took less than a minute; I created 2 Partitions; One for MacBook Pro "Time Machine" backup Data ,,, and One for me, storage & stuff :-)
I like the convenience of the "On/Off" Switch !!! -- I love the long ambient blue Access Light !!! -- It is very quiet for electro-mechanical disk drive. -- It quickly Mounts & Un-Mounts from my MacBook Pro !!!
