Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LaCie Hard Disk 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive designed by Neil Poulton 301304UCustomer Review: Works with Dish Network VIP 722 DVR Summary: 5 Stars
It's so nice when something is easy to set up, easy to use and just works without a hassle. I wanted to get an external hard drive so I could archive some of my recorded shows/movies and free up some room on my dish detwork VIP722 DVR receiver. I've used Lacie hard drives for over 10 years to back up PC and Mac files and I've found they have been dependable. I went with a 1 TB because the DVR receiver manual said my DVR would not read any more than that. It was easy to set up and use the drive with the on-screen menus. I was able to archive some of my favorite movies and tv shows and free up more space on my DVR. You can watch shows directly from the external hard drive or quickly restore them to the DVR. I've watched a few high def movies from the external drive and had no problems with lag. I wish I had done this a long time ago - instead of deleting shows when the DVR got full.
Pros:
Simple to set up
Has an on/off switch on the back if you don't want it on all the time
Looks stylish with it's black case and blue light
Sits flat (horizontal) so there's less chance of it being knocked over
For Dish Network users - easy to use with the on screen menus and I did not have to pay any activation fees w/ dish net.
Cons: can't think of any
If you're interested, these are the steps I used to connect the drive to the Dish Network VIP722 DVR receiver. (Your receiver may be different but the steps should be similar)
1. Plug in the power for the Lacie external hard drive. Plug in the usb cable to the the hard drive and connect it to the Dish DVR receiver's USB 2.0 port on the back. Turn on the Lacie hard drive's Power switch.
2. On the TV, a message popped up and asked to format the external hard drive and restart the receiver. Answer yes then wait a few minutes for the format to finish, then the receiver will restart which took a few more minutes. It looks like the DVR has shut itself off, but it will come back on by itself after a few minutes. It should now be ready for storing your shows.
Some tips to use the hard drive with the DVR: (Works from both TV1 and TV2 if using a dual receiver.)
To transfer recorded shows from the My Recordings list to the Lacie hard drive: Select My Media- My Media -Send to Device -Checkmark the recording(s)- select To Archive. You can View TV while the recordings are being copied and a message will pop up telling you when it's done.
Select My Media - My Media to see a list of the recorded shows stored on the external hard drive. (Or open the Media folder that is located in your recordings list.)
Select Play to view the shows directly from the external hard drive.
3-21-11 Note: I brought my lacie over to my friend's house to watch a couple of American Idol shows I had recorded because she had forgotten to record a couple of them. She has the same exact model Dish Network dvr receiver as we do, but it would not allow us to access the external hard drive. Maybe it embeds the serial number when the dvr formatted it. A message came up saying that the device was set up to use on another receiver and if we wanted to use it we would need to format the drive and erase everything on it. Answered "no" because I didn't want to lose my recordings. Brought it back home and plugged it into mine and everything works fine.
I have over 200 movies/shows saved on it, most are high def movies, and have used about 600 gb. So it's averaging about 3 gb per movie.
