Customer Review: Pray that you don't need support
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased the drive four months ago (I see that a newer version is now available), and it works, but squeaks every time the drive activates on startup and when Time Machine backs up data. The drive was sent in once, but the repair team at Lacie claimed they didn't hear the squeaking, and the drive was returned to me ... still squeaking. Useless subsequent suggestions included trying the drive on a different electrical circuit, but my computer setup is in my office; the possibility that it might not squeak in my garage is irrelevant.

The discussion is ongoing, but even if Lacie does replace the drive (doubtful at this point) it will be with a reconditioned unit, not a new one, and I will have paid shipping twice. This experience has been a disappointment, because I have an older Lacie drive that has worked flawlessly since the first day. Some reviewers have had no problems and rate the unit highly, but be aware that more than a few buyers have had problems and like me have not had a good experience with Lacie support. It is unlikely my next drive will be a Lacie.

Customer Review: Replacing this drive solved my computer's problems
Summary: 1 Stars

Because of the very positive reviews, I purchased this drive in August 2008 to use as a Time Machine backup for the iMac I bought on the same day. The computer never behaved to my expectations, being unable to hold an internet connection for more than an hour or so, draining memory so fast that I was having to restart several (or many) times a day. None of the diagnostics showed what was wrong, so I began to suspect the LaCie. I switched cables and plugged it into a USB port instead of the FireWire port in case the problem was in either the cable or the port. Finally I couldn't access the internet at all (although my very old iBook on the same desk had a strong signal) and decided the LaCie itself might be the problem. After I disconnected the LaCie and unplugged it, all the computer problems vanished. I have since installed a different brand of external hard drive and have had no further problems with internet access or with memory drain.

Customer Review: Garbage product and Worse Customer Service
Summary: 1 Stars

Purchased LaCie product to store my iTunes. Within one week the drive crashed. I called customer support and they refused to help me and honor the warranty. I eventually (year and a half later) reset the entire drive after finding no other option to save or retrieve my files, losing 10,000 songs. I began reloading the library and the system crashed again. LaCie refused to help saying the warranty had expired, but had I purchased one now, they had an extended warranty. Do not mess with LaCie equipment.

Customer Review: 3 laCie hard drives wnt down after 1 year of use
Summary: 1 Stars

I work with a lot of images, and about a two years ago purchased three laCie hard drives, 500 gb, 1 tb and 1.5 tb. All three are dead now, and they all died same way - after a long non use period of time (from a week to a couple of months) you turn them on and nothing happens, they are dead, the disk is not spinning and no means can help. If you are looking for something reliable, please find something else.
