Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LaCie 301827U d2 Quadra 1 TB eSATA/FireWire800/FireWire400/USB 2.0 External Hard Disk

Customer Review: Expensive but high quality
Summary: 4 Stars

I ordered this 1TB hard drive to backup my pictures, music and movies form other hard drives with Carbon Copy Cloner. I like the multiple interface I can daisy chain my 500GB rugged to the FW800 port and works perfectly. I didn't install the backup softwares since they are not compatible with Leopard. The HD turns off automatically when I eject it from Finder which is a good feature but sadly the supplied cables are too short so you won't be able to hide the drive under your desk...

Customer Review: works good
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought Lacie d2 Quadra external hard drive about a month ago.
The hard drive looks very nice and more important works very good and pretty fast. I use the FireWire800 cable (don't have eSATA).

Till now, the only problem I'm facing is that sometimes after rebooting my machine, the drive is not automatically recognized, and I need to turn it off and on again in order to be added to the drives list.

I would recommend it to my friends.

Customer Review: No problems yet, QUIET and NOT hot
Summary: 4 Stars

No problems yet, very functional with my new MacBook Pro. One problem is that it doesnt go to sleep when mac is sleeping or even shutdown when used with either firewire...this isnt an issue with the drive as much as the Firewire ports on the mac giving power to those ports at all times. pple of course...was not helpful.

Customer Review: Good so far
Summary: 4 Stars

Easy to set up (at least on a Mac). Quiet operation. Still working after one month. If it's still working after two years, I'd give it five stars.

Customer Review: LaCie 1TB External Hard Disk Great device, LOUSY Customer Service.
Summary: 3 Stars

Everything the manufacturer claims about this product is true. It's cool, it's quiet, easy to use, great storage device...unless it suffers some kind of impact.

My dog's tail knocked it off the coffee table. It fell 14 inches onto 4 layers of carpet and padding. Since I managed to catch part of it halfway down, the impact on the floor was minimal but the device was still rendered useless.

It will now cost me more than twice what I paid for it, to have the data stored on the device retrieved by a professional (an expense that I do not mind paying for myself), BUT then I have to buy another one because LaCie's warranty doesn't cover this situation.

IMO, a company that cares about customer service would have offered to replace the device, instead they refused and warned me to use a LaCie approved Data Retrieval Service or void my warranty. The device is a dead block of metal...which they refuse to repair. Who cares if I void the warranty. They don't care.

In my opinion, if the device can't take a love tap...it's useless. I mean I dropped my 6 year old laptop down a flight of stairs while moving and it was fine...why can't this device be more impact resistant?

I purchased this device as a "safe" backup for my confidential documents, because of it's compact size...I thought it would be easy to grab in case of fire, flood, or what have you. Now that I know the disk wouldn't survive an emergency, I do not recommend it.
