Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LaCie 301827U d2 Quadra 1 TB eSATA/FireWire800/FireWire400/USB 2.0 External Hard DiskCustomer Review: Nice little drive... Summary: 5 Stars
A bit noisy... but does it's thing. I'm using it as a back-up of my main drive.
Customer Review: LaCie or not to LaCie? Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased the D2 Quatra, and it seems to work pretty good, it linked up to my pc (xp) with no problems at all.... the "One Button" software they provide does not work at all and customer support on helping me get the One Button software to work is horrible...
I keep getting errors when I install "One Button" that no one seems to know how to fix. But the LaCie "BACKUP" software works great, that is the main reason I purchased a LaCie.... I am buying another LaCie because it is a good and reliable extra storage unit for the price... In this day and age you need a back up of your back up... The nice thing about this unit is that it is very quiet and lays flat and the only way I know it is working is because it has a very slight warmth to the touch... Like others, I have spent hours researching external hard drives and I also use two external Western Digitals(3 year old units)... I like WD but I wanted something that had a good review for backing up data, with "specific software" that was made to work with the Hard Drive unit... I currently back up my whole computer plus the external WD's data on to my LaCie.. I think it is a wise gamble on this LaCie drive, because nothing is a sure thing when it comes to hard drives!
Customer Review: Good product, would recommend Summary: 4 Stars
I've used these drives for video production usage since 2003 and have loved every iteration of it. I like these in particular because they are one single drive instead of two drives in a RAID-0 arrangement. Yes it doesn't have as much throughput but it sure is way more reliable.
On that note this space is all for large video files and work files as I'm compressing and compiling DVD's. These drives hold up under hours and hours of reads and writes for years to come. In fact some drives I bought in 2005 just died but to clarify the housing died but the drives are still usable as internal drives. That said I would NOT use these drives or any firewire drive as an archival medium. Despite these being great drives there are other ways I would store sensitive material like spreadsheets and photographs. Any firewire drive is easy to knock over or unplug correctly and each time this happens you take a chance that it won't start up again.
One thing I would recommend if you use a mac is "Diskwarrior." it's a bit spendy but it has saved many a firewire drives from the clutches of re-formatting because it was having trouble mounting.
Customer Review: Great product for Mac Summary: 4 Stars
Hi, i bought this one after i first bought the laCie 250GB tripple in 2004. I was waiting for the "fanless" version to come out, so it was worth the wait. It is quite, fast, i like the daisy-chaining capability, since I have one FW port on my PowerBook with usb 1.0 ports. So Everything is cool. I just wish they did not ship with the so short cables (usb, FW, eSata). I can clearily see that they want to save money on those things, the FW cable was so short that i am using the FW cable of my 1st laCie disk. The SW is pre-loaded on the drive, so u better be careful the 1st time you use the disk (they wanted to save on cds) and last, no plastic bags for the cables, so i had the impression that i was opening a 2nd hand drive box.... But performance wise, it's a great product~!
Customer Review: fast...fast...FAST. GREAT DRIVE Summary: 4 Stars
WOW. Once again Lacie performs to my expectations. I have the older 500gb d2 that is 1.5 esata (not the full speed esata). I use it connected to firewire 800. After I filled this drive and looking for a way to increase my home theatre options...this drive fit the bill with its 1TB capacity.
Just to compare them, I daisy chained them with firewire 800 and copied over a 12GB folder. According to my mac, it would be done in 6 mins.
So then i hooked them up to esata on my macbook pro. 12GB file copied in 3 mins! talk about fast.
So after less than 5 mins I am copying huge folders in almost the time it takes to make a hot pocket in the microwave. I would give it 5 stars, but it seems to be loud when copying from my other drive.
