Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LG BD 370 Network Blu-ray Disc Player

Customer Review: Excellent player for a reasonable price
Summary: 5 Stars

When my old Denon DVD player finally gave up the ghost I had to get a replacement. Though I have been skittish about going over to Blu-ray discs I figured that this was as good a time as any to take the plunge.

I carefully read all the other reviews, narrowing my choice to Panasonic, Samsung, and LG. I have a Pioneer 50 inch Kuro and a Panasonic 58 inch Vierra both of which are 1080p. Since I have had excellent luck with LG products ranging from cell phones to washers, dryers, and refrigerators, and since the reviews praised this particular player more highly than the others, I thought it was worth a try.

And it was. The DVD quality for my large collection was markedly superior to my Denon, which at the time was one of the best. The Blu-ray however is simply breathtaking.

My first Blu-ray in the machine was Amadeus. Both the picture and the sound were amazing. I have since viewed The Dark Knight, two operas -- Die Walkure and Carmen -- and the Criterion version of The Third Man. All these are familiar to me in their DVD versions. The Blu-ray, even of an older black and white film like The Third Man, is amazing.

As to this player, I have not yet used the netflix feature. If and when I do I will add to this review. But as a very slick looking DVD and Blu-ray disc player I can highly recommend it. The picture, on two very fine televisions, is outstanding. And for players above the entry level but below the videophile price point, this is just right.

Customer Review: Excellent player for DVD, BluRay, and Netflix
Summary: 5 Stars

I hooked this Blu-ray player up to a Sony Wega 32" CRT television (still haven't seen a reason to "upgrade" to anything else) - and while the TV is 1080i, using the HDMI connection worked flawlessly. If anyone questions whether this will work with older TV's...yes, it will. In fact, you can hook it up all the most popular ways, and while you'll lose resolution, it will still work.

So, hookup was a breeze. Plug in the power, plug in the HDMI from unit to TV, and turn it on. Put a DVD in, and it just works.

The actual reason for purchasing this was to stream Netflix, though. (I already had a DVD player that wasn't bluray.) However, given the comparison between the Roku Digital Video Player and this one, this one won. While the Roku can play Amazon.com video, both can do Netflix... this one also works flawlessly with YouTube. Spending a bit more ended up getting an upgraded DVD player, a Netflix player, consolidating units...and this one works VERY well.

I haven't had any sound-sync issues with this over YouTube or Netflix as other reviews have mentioned...also, looking for a firmware update, mine already had the latest version. Maybe something has been fixed, but I have had no problems whatsoever.

Would definitely buy again, and recommend to anyone.

Customer Review: Perfect companion for LG LCD TVs and Netflix
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the first Blu-ray player I've purchased, and I feel fortunate I have not had to put up with the problems mentioned by so many Blu-ray users of other products. This player, for example, does not have the extremely long load times for Blu-ray discs.

I bought this at the same time I was buying an LG 55LH40 55-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV, Gloss Black. They work perfectly together, an advantage to buying products by the same manufacturer. If I put a disc into the player, the TV turns on automatically, as just one example.

One big reason I wanted to get this player is the ability to watch Netflix instant streaming (among other options), one of the great advantages of LG players. I did not realize before buying that one has to have internet wired into this player, and we did not have that option because of the location, but by using an Apple Airport Express, it became painless (plus there are other ways). I suppose if I get another one, I may consider the LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player, or something similar, which already has wireless reception built in.

Customer Review: Very good mid-price Blu-ray player, lots of features
Summary: 5 Stars

I upgraded to a Blu-ray player only because a rented DVD trashed my previous player's laser. I found this LG unit at Amazon and was inclined toward it because I felt it should work well with my recently acquired LG flat-screen TV, plus the user reviews were mostly good. I have not been disappointed. I think many of the issues related by some reviewers stem from the fact these networked disk players are really a form of special computer, so the ailments all computers suffer can afflict a Blu-ray player as well.

For example, our Netflix instant queue is viewable on this LG player, but the quality depends on my LAN, how I'm connected to it, local loop congestions (my cable company is the broadband provider), and possibly anything going on at Netflix's servers. Lots of opportunities for problems in this chain, the weakest link controls what you see. That said, the results are remarkably good most of the time. And when playing a local disk, the results are first class, especially with an AV receiver than can decode the latest surround sound formats. I've had only one Blu-ray disk that wouldn't play, and I chalk that to a bad disk, not the player, because many others have played without trouble.

I paid $148 for this unit, and I recommend it.

Customer Review: Just what I needed
Summary: 5 Stars

So, the time finally came to consider upgrading ye old DVD player to something new. I've been looking at options for streaming Netflix movies for some time, so this device was on my radar. After carefully checking the reviews and the options, I decided to go with the BD370. And it was a good choice.

Setup:
It really cannot be much simpler. One power cord, one network cord and the AV cable(s) (HDMI if you can, component cables if not). Plug everything into where it needs to go, and you are all done.

First startup:
Mine asked for a firmware update. From reading the reviews, I know this is a touchy subject. I opted for "yes, go for it", and it downloaded and installed the newest firmware without incident. The player restarted, and display a new menu, now with CinemaNow support as well!

This player is so simple a 6 year old can use it. My 6 year old has no issues viewing DVDs/Blu-Rays or picking her shows/movies from the Netflix list.

The quality of the streaming movies from Netflix is absolutely amazing. I've never noticed any stuttering, drops, disconnects or any issues whatsoever. I pick a show, wait a few seconds for it to load, and it is movie time.
