Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of LG BD 370 Network Blu-ray Disc Player

Customer Review: OnSaleIt'sAWinner
Summary: 5 Stars

As a background, I have owned or still own everything from a Beta Max, to Laser Disk video players, HDDVD and now Blu Ray via the LG 370 so I'm a bit of a home entertainment "enthusiast" or nut. I've owned the LG 370 for a month and it has worked flawlessly. Network setup was simple. My Ethernet connection is hardwired directly to the router via category 6 cable. That's as straight forward a connection as possible. I did not have to configure the firewall or any other settings on my Buffalo WHR-G54 router (54 megabits/sec). It just worked. The router connects to a cablemodem and I have comcast HighSpeed internet that minimally provides 10 mbs to the internet (speeds vary for several reasons one being the number of concurrent users sharing the cable link. I live in a moderately populated NW suburb of Chicago). The player came to life, received its DHCP enabled IP address (this activity is not visible, just dots scrolling across the screen), then, Movie, Pictures, Music, Netflix, YouTube and CinemaNow icons were displayed. After firing it up, there was one firmware update and it went smoothly. The user is prompted through a simple process with clear and intuitive on screen directions. I didn't notice any change after the update. It is flat out cool to have a Netflix library of entertainment at your fingertips with "Instant Watch". You must use your computer to populate the instant watch queue at netflix.com. Then, with the LG's on screen display of easily understood icons, you pick Netflix with the remote's cursor, the 370 connects to Netflix in a heartbeat or two, the Netflix queue appears as a horizontal display of title art and you scroll through your queue with the remote's cursor and pick your flick. I have yet to experience any issues with video streaming nor have I reached any limitation for the number of flix displayed in the queue. Good to excellent video quality depending on the flick, audio is average even in HD streamed videos ( I have a bonified killer 7.1 surround sound system with Denon preamps, Stratos monoblock amps and Martin Logan speakers). The average audio isn't the player but Netflix streaming as audio from DVDs and Blu Ray is very good. Required is a Netflix subscription and a simple one-time registration with Netflix in which you must use a computer to get the registration number from Netflix and enter it into the LG/Netflix screen via the (non backlit) well laid-out remote. I have since programmed all the important functions into my backlit universal mx-500 remote (highly recommended, Google mx-500. It's a very capable midrange universal remote). The YouTube connection is nice and our neighbors were wowed with "the technology". Searching YouTube titles via the remote is cumbersome as you must input each letter of the title through an onscreen keyboard, then you use the remote's curser to scroll and pick each letter of the title. The process is simplified with the YouTube guessing list (it's a capable guesser) which presents a list of guessed titles as you fill out your title search. You are also presented with a list of YouTube recent favorites as a choice when you first select the YouTube icon. I like the YouTube feature but the sound and video is of low quality which is a turnoff to me. That is not because of the player but YouTube itself. Still, it's cool. The LG 370 is sleek and low profile. Load times are terrific. Playback quality is terrific for both DVDs and Blu Ray. Upscaling of DVDs to 1080p looks great to me and is close to Blu Ray resolution. I can't speak to the Blu Ray live feature as I have only tested that capability without understanding it much. You need to have a thumb drive (1 gig minimum) inserted into the LG 370 to activate that feature. The USB slot hides behind a front panel which must be in the down position for the thumb drive to be inserted. Not a big deal for me. You can also play music and display pictures that are on the thumb drive but I haven't tested that. So, the LG 370 was a winner for me as it was 130 bones during the Pre-Christmas blitz. Thankfully, I can't speak to LG tech support because I have not had to use it. Blu Ray players with network connectivity have become affordable, so I jumped in and I'm glad I did. As with all things tech, this player's feature-set will be surpassed by the next generation player, but for now, it is a great value and works flawlessly.
