Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kingston 19-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Memory Card Reader FCR-HS219/1Customer Review: Works exactly as promised Summary: 5 Stars
I bought a computer with a media reader. Even with a Core 2 Duo processor and 4 GB of RAM, the computer hiccuped and froze up whenever I wanted it to read my camera's SD card. Now that I have the Kingston card reader, what a change! It's easy to install. You basically just plug it into your USB port and it automatically installs its software and drivers. It also has a short USB cord and an extender cord, which is nice. Considering the USB port is usually on the back of the tower (where it's dusty and annoying to fiddle with), it's nice to be able to switch out whatever's plugged into my USB without having to access the tower.
The reader easily accesses the SD card and everything on the card pops up immediately. Transfer to and from the card and the PC is very quick. I'm very happy with this purchase and think it's a great deal. Very well priced, and you don't have to burn through the camera's battery just to upload pics.
Customer Review: Excellent external reader Summary: 5 Stars
My newer computer is an HP 64 bit Vista desktop. For whatever reason it is a hit or miss on reading SD cards. Reads the Kindle formatted cards just fine, but when it comes to cards with pictures on them--well the computer is very aggravating to work with. I purchased this in hopes that the reader would simplify matters and I wouldn't have to fight with the computer to load pictures. It works like a dream. Why there is a disconnect with putting the SD card for the cameras directly into the computer slot--I have no clue and tech support doesn't know either. With the Kingston reader I am able to put the card into the device and voila pictures downloaded to my computer! I realize for most of you this happens automatically, but this device has saved me hours of frustration over trying to get the SD cards to read on the computer! Sometimes it is the small things in life that make you smile--and the Kingston reader has me smiling big time!
Customer Review: Terrific card reader at a reasonable price Summary: 5 Stars
Card readers have become bargain items in recent years, but the price of this unit was ridiculously cheap. I suppose the "Made in China" label explains this to some extent but overall the technologies associated with these devices has become fairly standardized and hence the price drops. This particular unit accommodates 19 types of card, apparently; for me, its capacity to read CF, SD, SDHC, and MS/Duo types make it extremely useful. It attaches to the computer via USB 2.0 connection. It works. My laptop computer does not feature a CF card reader so this device travels with me when I take photo expeditions. It has a cute feature, i.e., the inserted card can be retracted into the "shell" of the device (kind of like a turtle), which saves a little space. This actually would not really be necessary to its functionality but in some situations it might protect the card from damage.
So far, so good!
Customer Review: Fast; Cord is Nice Summary: 5 Stars
For the price, this was a great deal. Reads everything under the sun. (But to be honest, I've only used it with SD cards so far, but the peace of mind knowing that I'm ready for anything is great) I clocked it's transfer rate of large files with my SanDisk Extreme III at 44MB/s read and 17 MB/s write. (note that MB is megaBYTE, as in 8 megaBITs (Mb) ) This means there is little or no bottlenecking at the reader. Of course my image import times are only about half what my USB 1.1 reader dies, as the start/stop cycles between pictures in the MS camera wizard take most of the time.
Also, the cord option is nice - it has a built-in 2-inch cord for laptops and comes with a 3ft extension for other applications. Also the ports are retractable into the case for extra safety for your cards, so they aren't the farthest thing sticking out.
All-in-all, very nice product for a good price.
Customer Review: Does More Than Expected Summary: 5 Stars
My new computer came without a media card reader so I decided to order this one. It was shipped ahead of schedule and arrived in perfect condition. One of the problems I'd had with my old computer with an integrated media reader was getting down on the floor to insert some of the tiny media into their respective drive slots.
I have this external reader sitting on top of my computer and with the cable extension can lift it up and install the media in the slots while sitting in my chair. This is much easier, needless to say. I was also pleased to see that it included a really small slot for the memory card used by my cell phone. I've been able to conviently add photos to my cell phone from my computer without having to use an adapter.
The computer recognized the media reader immediately and assigned drive letters to all of the slots. To this point it has worked perfectly.
