Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kingston DataTraveler I - 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DTI/8GBCustomer Review: Just fine for what it is and what it costs... Summary: 5 Stars
I've seen some disparaging comments about the speed of this series of devices relative to some other USB flash drives, and my experience bears that out somewhat in certain applications. (I have the 8 GB currently).
Someone needing top speed -- such as someone who wants to create (say) a bootable Linux drive to run from -- may be wise to pay more for a faster device. You do get what you pay for, and at this price point you're not going to have top-of-the-line performance. It's no different than paying $15,000 for a solid and reliable car and being unhappy that it doesn't have the performance of a $70,000 sports car.
But if you buy it only for occasional backups or to transfer files from one computer to another where a few extra seconds won't matter, it's perfectly suited for that task. So for the purposes I bought it for, AND understanding that price and performance are related, it's everything I needed it to be for my uses. If I wanted to boot Linux from it, I'd probably be a little disappointed and return it for a faster one.
Customer Review: Great Device Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this 8GB Flash Drive to transfer small files to a remote pc and to carry files with me to share with a friend. It works well with MS Vista Home Prem... I took it out of the package and inserted it into my Dell Pc usb port and my computer found the driver and it was ready to work. So far I have used Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Vista OS's.
I was able to transfer files with no problems at all. I decided to get the 8 gb instead of the 2gb so I would have more storage and less Flash Drives to keep up with. This is a great device if you want to transfer or store data for a short time and without wasting a CD-R or DVD-R.
Only thing I wished that this flash drive had was a chain or a wrist strap. You can buy one or just store it in a storage case.
I have had this since Dec 2008 and paid $12.99 so it was a great buy.
Customer Review: Simplisty is at its best with this! Summary: 5 Stars
Pros:
[x]Very cheap for 8gb...
[x]Doesn't have that BullS*** additional software "U3".
[x]so that means more room for other IMPORTANT things.
[x]Doesn't install extra junk on every computer you use it with *cough* u3
[x] Much faster without the u3
[x] Nice and compact
Cons:
Didn't come with that string you attach at the end of the USB hub. like all the others do. even though it had a chain at the back FOR the string....still nothing was there to use it with. oh well
its a supra small thing, nothing to get all crazy about. im just glad that this doesn't have U3
it seems to be the ONLY simplistic USB out there.
FYI: the simpler the USB - more room you get to have to store your info
Customer Review: An awesome 8 gig flash drive! Summary: 5 Stars
I absolutely love this flash drive! When it arrived, I plugged it into both my desktop and laptop computers. I was able to transfer files effortlessly from one computer to another, from Vista to XP with no problems at all. It was so easy, anybody can do it. When I plugged it into both computers, it immediately came up as a recognized drive on both computers. I just dragged and dropped files to it, and that was it! So far it has been rock-solid reliable, although I've only had it for 3 weeks. There is no intrusive software to learn or load, no crap to deal with. Just plug it in, and it works! The price is great, the size is great, I just love this thing! If I get another one, I will think about getting the 16 gig, 32 gig, or even the 64 gig models.
Customer Review: A very Good product Summary: 5 Stars
I have used Kingston drives for quite some time now and they all take a beating and keep on going. I write screenplays and need to transport files between home and the studio and let me tell you these drives are workhorses that function very well on windows and mac. If you really need an inexpensive way to save and backup any file type this is the way to go. I have had no problems at all with the 4gb version and the 8gb version. These drives are not very fast so I dont recommend running applications off of them even though you probobly can. These drives are always in the pockets of my jeans along with keys coins and other junk and still after all the surface scratches and dirt they work like a charm.
