Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kingston DataTraveler 100 - 16 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DT100/16GBCustomer Review: Just wow. Summary: 5 Stars
I was browsing through Amazon.com one day looking for USB flash drives, and was astonished at what I saw. A major-brand 16GB flash drive for $25? I simply couldn't believe my eyes, especially considering the fact that I've seen the same size drives go for $80 or $90. I received it as a Christmas gift this year (2008,) and it's got to be the best storage device I've ever had. I have been able to transfer tons of videos, programs, and music with no problems at all, and it's really nice to not have to worry about running out of space with most things I need to transfer. I'm unsure about older versions of this drive, but mine has a small LED that indicates when the drive is being read from/written to, which is a must, in my book.
I have very few gripes about this drive. Sure, it's not as fast as many smaller flash drives out there, but the capacity and the price more than make up for its speed. I don't even mind the tab that's used for extending the USB connector, as some people are concerned about. It seems solid and is designed with a low profile to minimize the possibility of accidentally opening the drive. I have a few SanDisk Cruzers that I wish were designed this way.
All in all, I recommend this flash drive to anyone who has the need for large mobile storage at a better-than-reasonable price. I'll probably buy a couple more of these sometime this year, as a matter of fact. The price and functionality cannot be beaten!
Customer Review: Works great - no complaints - easy ENCRYPTION Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this 16GB Kingston flash drive for some time now and it's been great. No complaints at all. I use it as a backup drive and usually keep it in the car.
As an aside, a friend kept a backup flash drive on his key ring, which worked great until he lost his keys and then he got really worried someone would get hold of the flash drive and with it a lot of his personal information.
I solve this problem by using TrueCrypt to create an encrypted "volume" (which is just another file on the flash drive). TrueCrypt then "mounts" this volume on the PC as if it were a new disk. You read from and write to this pseudo-disk as you would with any other mass storage device (i.e., the encryption and decryption processes are invisible). Very clever stuff. TrueCrypt is free, and it isn't as hard to learn as it sounds. In fact, the beginner's tutorial is likely all you'll need. Just stick to creating TrueCrypt volumes and forget about encrypted partitions, at least to start. You can do the tutorial and download the program from [...]
Customer Review: It does the job the ad promised. Summary: 5 Stars
I am quite satisfied with it.
The main problem I had at first was that the multilingual instructions ripped when I tore open the package, but the lost versions were not any that I needed; I would suggest folding them instead of having them take up the entire package.
As for the functionality of the unit, it does seem a little slow at times (I transferred 5.6GB of files to it, and it took a while, but putting them on a diferent flash drive from that one was even slower), but overall, it performs adequately for my needs.
As for the lack of a transfer LED, I don't really miss that. I am watching the files transfer with a monitor window so don't need a light. And those lights take USB power and will degrade the performance of an unpowered hub.
Maybe when they get cheaper, I'll buy a 32!
I think everyone ought to try these and experience their excellent storage capacity (and that they apparently stand up to being washed :) ).
Customer Review: Plenty of Storage; Very Reliable. Summary: 5 Stars
I use this product quite often. I have a few other USB flash drives lying around but this one by far works the best. One of my other drives broke after a few weeks of normal use but this one hasn't failed on me yet. The transfer speed on this flash drive is about what it should be for a USB drive. What I really enjoy about this item is the fact that it has 16GB of storage space. This gives me much more room to add the files I need to when I'm on the move. This flash drive is very reliable and it's sleek design is very appealing to my taste. I found similar flash drives at the store for about the same price but with much less storage space (about 4GB or so). Kingston is a reliable brand and this is a reliable product. Just make sure you don't lose it; it is pretty small! If you need a USB flash drive with plenty of storage space, a sleek design, and decent transfer speeds, then the Kingston DataTraveler 16GB USB Flash Drive is your answer.
Customer Review: It does have an LED Summary: 5 Stars
In response to Thomas Tracy's review, this drive does have an LED. It is green and can be seen through the "window" which is also the logo for the flash drive -- a man's face.
I also experienced faster write times. While not using as complex a data set, I was able to transfer large movie files from an external hard drive to this flash drive at about 15 seconds per 100MB. That's about 2.5 minutes per 1GB.
The outer shell is a plastic that may feel flimsy when you hold it, but it should be able to resist most impacts. Don't put it in your back pocket, but sensitive devices like this should never be sat upon. The tab that slides the connector in and out must be depressed before it can be moved, so it keeps the connector safe and steady.
The capacity and price make this drive a great value. It has a slot in the end to tie a string or small keychain to.
