Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kingston DataTraveler Mini Slim 16 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DTMS/16GB (Black)Customer Review: Great little USB Drive Summary: 5 Stars
I was looking for a usb drive that I could attach to my keychain and not have to worry about it being bulky or breaking. I was planning on getting a retractable drive but decided on this as it is one solid piece that you don't have to worry about breaking or losing a cap.
This thing is a great USB drive. I was a little worried that the exposed end would give me trouble since I attached this to my keychain but I have not had any issues. It is designed so that the connectors sit down in a groove so that you don't have to worry about them getting worn, scratched or ruined.
The size of this thing also blew me away. It is literally the smallest thing on my key chain. It is shorter than any of the keys and it is just as thick as a house key except for the end that attaches to your keychain so as to give it a little more strength and durability.
The speed is also pretty good as well. When I first got this I googled the best way to format it for the sake of speed. I got mixed results so I decided to just test myself. I did several tests for FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS and at different allocation sizes. I tested transerferring lots of small files like documents, then lots of medium size files like music and then large files like HD TV Shows(2GB). This was all tested on Vista.
In almost every test NTFS was the fastest with a sustained transfer of about 17-18MB a sec. I however decided to format it to FAT32 with the sector allocation at max and I am able to get about 15MB a sec. My reason for doing this is so that I can store media on it and play them through my XBox 360. Just be aware if you format to FAT32 you will not be able to add files larger than 4GB. If you want to have files larger than 4GB, you must format to NTFS.
For the sake of this review I have a 716MB movie that I am transferring on an XP machine as I type and it has taken 35secs to transfer, which comes out to about 20MB a sec. So it appears you may get different speeds depending on the machine and OS you are using.
The bottom line is this is a very nice usb drive that will give you typical usb speeds in a small sleek design that you can conveniently attach to your key chain without having to worry about losing a cap or breaking the connectors.
