Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kingston DataTraveler 101 - 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DT101Y/4GB (Yellow)Customer Review: Just a Great Flash Drive in Every Respect Including Telling You It's Working Summary: 5 Stars
I have more flash drives than I care to admit. (I include jump drives going back to my still used Lexar 512 MB.) I don't care if they're black or yellow or green. I do care that they're one piece and that you can't lose the cap. I also would like speed and, most important that they work "PROPERLY" in my new car which has a USB hub in which I can plug and play any Kingston drive in random order. That was not possible with an HP jump drive that I just bought.
The speed is excellent for a jump drive. It transfers photos, music, documents, whatever with relative speed, almost as fast if not as fast as to my Western Digital external drives (which I also like, btw, but that's slightly off subject).
It's a simple plug and play or plug and transfer or plug and fill. It's fast. It's durable, and I like the fact that it's foldable. I even like the fact that it comes in different colors, not that I'm into colors on such utilitarian objects, but I can readily tell the difference between my 4 GB and 8 GB Kingstons just by color. In fact, I JUST PURCHASED 2 16GB Kingstons in two more colors even though one will be in the car again and was unnecessarily Cyan.
I mentioned my old Lexar jump drive. There was a reason. As long ago as I bought that, it had an LED that showed you it was transferring data. That is not true of some of the new and fairly highly priced jump drives such as HP. Well, all the Kingstons that I have and will have have an LED that shows that it's functioning properly.
Finally, you want perfect transfers when it comes to music and photos which is what I'll be using the 16GB drives for, but also the 4 and 8. I've had others that have cut off music selections and have made a mess of some photos, i.e., have not transferred all the pixels. Yes, I thought that was peculiar, too, but when it happened on the second and third drives, I was determined to reduce the likelihood of that happening again. The only thing I could think of was only using 90% of the drives' capacities. It usually worked, but those were 2 and 4 GB drives. With Kingstons, I just pack them, and they've performed admirably.
What I've said here is applicable to the 4 and 8 GB Kingstons. I haven't gotten the 16GB yet, but I'm looking forward to them although I'm still going to have to leave some photos and some music off each drive, and I don't look forward to the decision-making process for what to leave off. But I sure an looking forward to my next 6 hour drive to my favorite national park with one drive playing music and the other waiting to be filled with fantastic nature photography, maybe even a video.
