Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kingston DataTraveler 100 - 32 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DT100/32GB (Black)

Customer Review: Well-suited for travel, quick backups
Summary: 5 Stars

I see how I am becoming a collector and, in some ways, a fan of Kingston's flash drives. I started with the 2GB model, then I acquired the 4GB, the 8GB (two), the 16GB and now I decided to give the 32GB a try.

The 32GB DataTraveler, besides doubling the storage capacity over its immediate predecessor in the line is a physically redesigned model. The retractable connector should make it smaller and easier to carry. However, I am always concerned when 'moving parts' play a significant role in the operation of a solid-state device.

My evaluation:

- As a USB 2.0 'hi-Speed' device, the I/O should be at a respectable but not break-neck 480 Mbit/s (it's megaBITS, which translates to about 60 megaBYTES per second).
- The device installs itself and does not require any software to be recognized as a 'drive' on a Vista or XP computer. Can't speak for other operating systems.
- It formats and partitions as any 'spinning' drive.
- Can be used to store backups.
- Tolerable when used with apps that require some moderate I/O but I would not try to make it a swap drive.
- A device of this size could be successfully used (if formated as FAT32 [Google FAT32FORMAT] to fully backing up a 40GB PS3 or even a half-full 60GB PS3 prior to upgrading the console's disk. Of course, it can be reused for other purposes after the upgrade completes.

There seems to be no significant difference as far as cost between buying this or 2 16GB drives and, other than 'design' they perform the same so, whether going with this or 2 16GB should be a matter of specific needs.
