Customer Review: An excellent device, with a few shortcomings Summary: 4 Stars
These days USB flash drives are the easiest way to move data back and forth, and you never know when one might come in handy, so I always carry one with me wherever I go. That said, a small form-factor helps a great deal in not having this be an inconvenience.
I've used both this KingMax Super Stick and another gumstick-style drive from Transcend which was similar. These drives achieve their small size by using a double-sized PCB construction that allows them to be made about half the height of a female USB port (~2.2mm). The encapsulated PCB on which the USB contacts are formed is glued to a thin plastic casing that provides the lanyard hole.
The PCB is encapsulated in a layered plastic that almost looks like it was surface injected, but I believe it actually uses adhesive. Whatever the case, the circuit components are sealed very tightly, making it extremely well-protected from the elements. I'm not one to tempt fate, but mine has survived several accidental dips in the kitchen sink. Standard flash drives use a single-sided process coupled with a snap-on plastic casing, which means all the components are exposed inside - never let these drives anywhere near water!
The tight sealing of this drive also insulates its components, making them more sensitive to heat issues. The designers have tuned the drive to operate without risk of overheating. So, the drive is noticeably slower than typical models. I haven't bothered to do a speed benchmark, but transferring a few hundred megs takes about a minute or two. This is acceptable to me, but I wouldn't use it for Vista Boost or anything speed-sensitive.
Although the PCB itself is constructed solidly and I could see it lasting for years, the outer plastic shell is not built as well. The adhesive has begun to wear on both my gumstick-drives so that you can see the PCB pulling away from the casing if you press on it a certain way. The worst part of the shell is that only a sliver of plastic separates the lanyard hole from the edge. I prefer attaching the drives to a small key-chain ring, and the plastic adjacent to the lanyard hole on both my drives broke within a few months from the pressure on them.
All in all, the small-size of this drive is a wonderful thing, and I will be getting more in the near future. The poor durability of the outer casing is its biggest annoyance, but with USB memory this cheap these days, it's worth it to be able to keep one unnoticed in my pocket at all times.
Customer Review: Kingmax Superstick - does the job right Summary: 4 Stars
I am very pleased with the 4GB Kingmax Superstick. Small as promised. I did run it through washer and dryer (not on purpose). It did come out a winner. No damage to the drive or data.
However, the stick itself is not quite sturdy. The plastic case it came with so flimsy so that it tore off after a couple of weeks of hanging on my key chain (It does not stay on stick). Then after a year, the top portion of the drive with the hole, that was attached to the key chain broke. The drive itself is still functional. But cannot be attached to the key chain. It goes into my wallet.
Recommendation to the manufacturer: Make the case attachable to the key chain and closeable with a lid or cover or flap so that it stays on the drive. Reinforce the attachment of the top portion of the drive with the hole.
Customer Review: This was just what i wanted Summary: 4 Stars
I used the 4GB version of this drive for almost a year. I kept it on my key ring and it went with me everywhere. I never had any problems with it until i noticed it starting to come apart near where the hole is. I taped it together and knew it was time to back up everything and order a new flash drive. Sure enough, it stopped working about a week or two later. But hey, flash drives are cheap and should be treated as disposable (if you remember to back up your data.) I got a solid years use out of this for around 10 or 12 bucks. If you like compact drives I recommend the SUPER TALENT MS Series 8GB Flash Drive. It has a swivel type of case and quick release clip plus free shipping from newegg.com
Customer Review: Small drive packs a punch Summary: 4 Stars
The flash drive works just as fast as a regular USB. I've had NO problems with it since I ordered it about a month ago. I'd definitely recommend this little guy for anyone. It comes with a nice case too that you can clip to your keys or backpack or whatever. Really though, 8 gigs and smaller than a paper clip -- definitely awesome.
