Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kensington K72213USA Mouse-in-a-Box Optical 2 USB Mouse (PC/Mac) (72213)Customer Review: Great "old-school" mouse Summary: 5 Stars
It's NOT wireless. It's NOT touch sensitive. It does NOT have ten buttons. But it IS a nice $15 mouse.
If you don't mind having a USB cable, don't like replacing (or charging) batteries, don't want to remember "multi-touch" gestures, and think three buttons plus scroll-wheel is more than enough, this mouse is an excellent choice. It has the usual left and right buttons plus a scroll-wheel that clicks down as the third button. For me, it replaced an old "standard" Microsoft optical mouse that died after many years of use.
I use mine with an iMac. From the pictures, I thought this mouse was white, but it is actually a very bright silver on the top half and black on the bottom half. It looks good on a Mac desktop. It will obviously also work with a Windows PC; it even comes with one of those green USB to PS/2 adapter plugs.
No additional software is needed, or even available. The "Instruction Guide" has one step; plug it in. For using with a Mac, the standard Mac OS X mouse driver works fine. You can set it to click and "right" (control) click with either button. You can adjust the tracking and scroll-wheel sensitivity. The scroll-wheel has a nice feel, and the mouse is easy to slide around. It is high enough (unlike Apple's devices) to allow my palm to partially rest on the mouse, and the overall shape is comfortable. The cord is quite long. The location where you place your thumb (and the opposing side) has a slight "reverse angle" (gets wider at the top), which is a thoughtful design that makes lifting the mouse easy without pressing too hard to grip the mouse.
One thing you cannot set directly (with a Mac) is the "center" (scroll-wheel) click action, but if you have Apple's Mighty Mouse that came with the Mac (even if broken), you can set up the center click action. Just plug in the Mighty Mouse; the Mouse System Preferences panel will change. Set the action for the "scroll-ball" click as desired. After unplugging the Mighty Mouse, the Kensington Mouse will continue to perform that same action as the center click. I have mine set to do Exposé, and for that particular setting (and for Spaces), you can also just use the Exposé & Spaces System Preferences panel and set it to use the "Middle Mouse Button" (no Mighty Mouse needed).
So in summary, Kensington offers a nice-looking, inexpensive, truly plug-and-play, and comfortable "regular" mouse that gets the job done without fanfare.
