Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kensington DomeHub 7-port USB 2.0 Hub with FlyLight

Customer Review: Looks good, functions as it should!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I got mine for about 1 week ago to match with my MBP (silver theme). Someone mentioned about the light indications not showing as they should, or in the wrong way but mine works fine.

CONS:
- light indicator shows exactly which USB ports are in use.
- Small in size
- Has USB port on top which comes in handy.
- Enough USB power- so far I didn't have to plug in the power charger yet.
- Comes with a USB plugged light.
- Comes with a extended USB cable (for you to connect the hub to your computer)
- the USB plug is silver + transparent in color which looks kinda nice.

PRONS:
- it camed with some minor scratches on the hub's surface although I just took it out from its sealed package carefully. Those surface scratches aren't too noticeable. (Didn't want to return it and waste time & money).
- as many have already mentioned, the USB cable is connected to the hub permanently.

Other thoughts:
- The USB cable connected the the hub is pretty thin. It'd be a good feature (look less noticeable) f you treat the cable nicely, but if you are harsh on the cable, it feels like it may break. Will be GREAT if this hub has firewire ports, but I'm very happy with this item.

Customer Review: Why user-centred design really works.
Summary: 5 Stars

The Kensington 7 Port USB 2.0 Dome Hub is a superb piece of user-centred design.

For years I've used USB ports that technically did their job, but failed in other areas. Take the most recent that I've been using - made by GE, it suffers from design flaws that are truly infuriating. First, there is not enough space between the USB port sockets, so that USB leads that have fat plugs cannot be plugged in next to each other. Secondly, the unit is so light (despite being a seven-port hub) that it slides around my desk whenever I move one of the leads that are plugged into it. It might work technically as a hub, but as a piece of useful technology it's hopeless. It has quite clearly never actually been tested by a real end-user in a working environment.

The Kensington 7 Port USB 2.0 Dome Hub, on the other hand, is superbly designed. Its rounded shape means that the USB lead plugs are adequately separated and all the ports can accommodate a lead with a fat plug. One of the ports is conveniently located right at the top of the dome, perfect positioning for items that are frequently plugged and unplugged, such as pen drives. And, the unit is heavily weighted, and never slides around my desk. And, it looks superb as well. Highly recommended.

Customer Review: Best USB hub I've ever had...
Summary: 5 Stars

The best thing... it's about apound in weight, so it will not slide around.

Next best thing... it has a port on top, perfect for flashdrives.

It also comes with a nifty little LEF light on a flexible stalk, which is long enough to be attached to a rear port and still light up my keyboard/tablet (I like to do my graphics work in the dark).

I don't understand the complaints others have made about the ports... They firmly grip all my USB connectors... So tightly in fact, that they take a little extra effort to shove in, but not so much that it feels like I have the connector backwards.

And the one complaint someone had about the length of the USB cable also seems a little odd... The pigtailed connector is a couple feet long, and the box includes a nice long extension. 99% of users should be happy with this arrangement.

Not much else to say, except I am quite pleased with it... it's different looking and not ugly, and simply works... I guess if I were to change anything, I would put blue or white LEDs on it, instead of green, but that's a personal preference.

Customer Review: Best USB hub I have ever owned
Summary: 5 Stars

This powered USB hub is excellent. You can plug in up to 7 USB devices. There are 6 USB ports on the back, and one on the top, which is very handy for thumb drives or anything needing a quick, temporary connection. The weighted base is great. It stays put. Other USB hubs tend to get twisted and turned when multiple cables are connected. Not this one. There are 7 green LEDs on the front that indicate which port has a device connected. I read an earlier post that indicated the LEDs corresponded to the USB port on the opposite side of the hub, which was counter-intuitive. Kensington must have fixed this issue because the LEDs on mine match up perfectly. The left LED corresponds the left-most USB port in the back, and so on.

I had no problems connecting this to my PC running Windows 7 RC, 64-bit. It was recognized immediately, which means it should work fine for Vista 64-bit also. I have had no problems with any of the devices I have used, which includes Logitech WebCam, iPhone, BlackBerry, a variety of thumb drives, Skype adapter, Bluetooth headsets, and external hard drives.

Customer Review: THIS is the usb hub you want!
Summary: 5 Stars

The fact that I am willing to even write a review about something as mundane as a USB hub should pretty much speak for itself!

It's just a few bucks more than the other USB hubs, but you will not be disappointed. It works great, of course, but the real feature is the unique shape and weight of it, which is just perfect. It does not slide around my desk like the cheap hubs do, and it has an extra port on the top of the ball so that I can quickly jam a thumb drive or other temporary device in without having to pick the hub up and hunt around for a free port.

It comes with a power supply but I never even plugged it in, not sure why you'd need one as the hub itself us powered via your computers USB connection. It also comes with a little USB goosneck light than some people might find useful; I amused myself with it for about 8 seconds and haven't used it since.
