Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kensington 64050 ComboSaver Notebook Lock and Security Cable (PC/Mac)Customer Review: For the price? Great item. Summary: 5 Stars
ALL laptop locks can be easily circumvented by professional thieves. And ALL laptop locks provide good to excellent protection against opportunist NON-professional thieves. This lock is one of the fairly good ones. And - for the price - unbeatable.
Customer Review: Not bad, but don't expect much Summary: 3 Stars
Not bad as a low level deterrent to theft, but as other reviewers have pointed out, it's not impossible to remove by damaging the cable, the lock, or just ripping it out of the Kensington lock port on the computer. Since each laptop manufacturer has their own way of making the port, you can't blame the lock if the port is weak.
That said, the combo is small, and rather like a cheap bicycle lock. I bought mine for convenience, so that I would not have a key sticking out of the lock of the cable I carry in my bag. (I use a keyed model on my docking station at work.) It's not hard to set your own combo, but I did have some trouble fitting this lock into my T43. Turned out the end of the "tang" was too long to swivel in my laptop's lock port, so I had to file off about 1 mm of the tang for it to work. Your own experience may differ.
If you really want your laptop theft-PROOF, don't leave it unattended. Period. If you want a little piece of mind while you take a meeting, lunch, or bio break, this -- like all cheap cable locks -- will provide sufficient deterrent to "opportunist" thieves. Professionals will be able to liberate your laptop in seconds. So if you're working in a theft-ridden locale ... take your laptop with you.
Customer Review: Okay quality Summary: 3 Stars
I don't fully agree with the other two reviewers. They say how the lock turns and it hides the code line on the table. What about flipping the lock around before you lock it? However, despite the other's not-so-true design problems, I agree that it is a little weak. The cable is very strong, but the lock portion that connects to the computer isn't. I know the slot is small, but why so small that it makes it weak. The point of the lock is to be strong and prevent breakage. I wouldn't say any of the locks are that strong, and this one isn't an exception.
Customer Review: just to clarify... Summary: 3 Stars
Just to clarify the idea behind the kensington lock is not merely to solidly secure the laptop or other valuable electronic item in place. The principle is a theft deterant and if someone tried to remove the lock with force they destroy the laptop as the lock is directly attached to the motherboard, making the laptop useless to the thief...or anyone else for that matter.
