This review deals with the original "Kanex" iAdapt 5.1 adapter. Kanex iAdapt 51 Mini DisplayPort to HDMI with 5.1 Channel Digital Audio. We bought the Kanex 5.1 to get the most out of our Media Server. We have a Mac Mini connected to a Toshiba HDTV using the Kanex 5.1 adapter and an HDMI cable directly to the TV. The only setup required was to access the Display Preferences on the Mini and specify we wanted to use the Kanex Adapter as the output source set at 1080P. We set the TV's picture size to "Native" and we're extremely pleased with the result. We intentionally connect all inputs directly to the TV. We connected a Toslink (digital audio cable) from the TV's "audio out" port to our surround sound receiver's digital "audio input" port. This results in a minimum of cables and connections. FYI: We found out the hard way that you can not get "true" Digital Audio (surround sound) using analog RCA cables, you MUST use a Toslink (digital cable)12 FT Digital Audio Optical TOSLink Cable Optic 12ft. Dolby "Pro Logic" is a "simulated" surround output realized when using analog cables. Dolby "Digital" is discrete "true" surround sound which can only be obtained by keeping your setup all digital. Only after we switched to the digital Toslink cable did we get the "WOW!" factor we we hoping for when we upgraded to a surround system over a stereo receiver. Our Denon receiver let us know we did the right thing after connecting the Toslink cable and removing the RCA cables we initially used by changing from "Analog input" to "Digital Input" on the main display. Using HDMI cables and/or DVI and Toslink connections is the only way to get the "true" digital experience in both video and audio. The Kanex 5.1 iAdapt is the product that does this best between a computer and a TV. We're very happy with this product!
