Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of JLab J3 Micro Atomic In-Ear Earphones with Travel Case - Jet BlackCustomer Review: They get the job done Summary: 5 Stars
I do not consider myself an audiophile, but with all of the airplane traveling I have been doing I needed to find a set of earphones that would ENABLE me to listen to music. The roar of the plane became too much. I did a lot of comparison shopping using Amazon.com customer reviews, CNET editor and customer reviews, and Consumer Reports reviews. In the end, I decided on the JLab earphones because they seemed to be the best value. I am SATISFIED with my current set.
I say VALUE because it seemed like the other earphones had too many problems to justify their $100, $200, even $400 price tags. I am not saying that a true (OCD) audiophile could not tell the difference between them all and that those price tags are not justified, but they do not seem of value. What if the cord breaks? What if I drop them and the casing cracks? And what if I lose them!? Other gripes were cord length and treble/bass balance. That's $200 I just dropped in the toilet. I thought critically and rationally about the decision and I am glad I made the choice I did: the JLabs have satisfactory sound quality and, at $30, I do not feel like I have to have a surveillance camera on them at all times. Seriously: you could buy several plane tickets to NYC for the price of some earphones, or several iPods, or a great set of desktop speakers for the price of those high end Bose and Shure earphones. If my JLabs break, I could buy MANY more before I reach the original retail value of an expensive set.
Now to the review. I do not know what kind of music people listen to when they post their reviews of "too much treble," "where are the mids?" or "the bass is overpowering." I created a diverse playlist that I will describe here in order to show you the roots of my review. Before I even listened to them, I burned them in for about 30 hours over 5 days using JLabs' website "burn track." I recommend you do this. Here is my test playlist:
Artist-Song
Iron & Wine-Resurrection Fern (in order to test soft bass and acoustic balance)
The XX-Shelter (a very quiet song that relies on bass)
Wilco-Bull Black Nova (a song with a very cacophonous ending)
MGMT-Future Reflections (a diverse song)
Josh Pyke-The Summer (quiet acoustic)
Junior Boys-Dull to Pause (big bass, electronic sounds)
Elliott Smith-Tomorrow, Tomorrow (acoustic genius)
Coldplay-Lost! (piano and bass)
Smashing Pumpkins-Tonight, Tonight (strings, bass, highs)
I created this list in order to experiment with a wide range of music. Granted, I do not listen to country, audiobooks, jazz, classical, etc. Mainly alternative rock, indie, electropop, dance, etc. I experienced reverberating bass and all-around good balance. I searched for areas where the earphones were lacking and did not find any to note. Are there better earphones? Probably, but these are pretty darn good; no complaints, especially for $30. The noise-isolating aspect of them is not 100% effective: I can hear some conversations and the loudspeaker on planes comes through just as piercing as it would without the earphones. However, there is significant reduction: probably some 90% of sound is blocked. I listened to these on four different flights (using several different types of planes) and on a subway/train. They satisfactorily reduce sound the a more-than-manageable level, even when listening to the soft acoustic music. My plane rides have become much more manageable because of them: no more pulsing headaches from the dull drone or crying babies. And I can hear bass in my music again!
By this time, I might be rambling, but I want to stress that you need not search for several hours like I did to find solid earphones and spend excessive amounts of money that you could use to buy other, more valuable items or experiences. Drop the $30 and burn them in. It comes with a very good case (In case you were wondering how to wind the earphones back up to place in case, wrap the cord around three fingers into a loop and it should fit perfectly back into the case) and four different sizes of "earplugs" to test. Be sure to test them ALL. I thought I had a good fit and thought, "no, I don't need to try the smaller sizes" but I did and it fit even better. You should literally FEEL the pulse of air from the bass when you have a tight fit.
To sum up, I am satisfied with these earphones: not in the somewhat negative connotation of "I am satisfied with second best after trying to achieve or attain something better" but in the positive connotation of "These satisfy my wants and needs." Good sound, solid bass, balanced tones, good case, many earplug sizes, sturdy design, good cord length (plenty of length to put in my pants pocket as a 6'1", but not too much length), and GREAT PRICE. Buy them: it's not too great of an investment, and it will pay off. But don't forget to burn them in!
