Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of JBuds Hi-Fi Noise-Reducing Ear Buds (Black)Customer Review: Comparative Review Summary: 5 Stars
In the past few months I bought four sets of relatively inexpensive earbuds and thought it might be helpful if I posted my impressions. The four sets I bought were to replace iPod earphones, use with my computer at the home and office and use with the monitoring system when I play guitar in church. I love music, but am not super fussy about sound. The four sets I tried were the JBuds Hi-Fi Noise-Reducing Ear Buds (Black), Creative Labs Noise Isolating Earphones (51MZ0085AA004), Griffin EarThump Earphones (Black), and Sennheiser CX300-B Earbuds (Black).
To start, the sound in all was quite acceptable, with more bass and a less harsh sound than the basic iPod earbuds. To get this sound, however, the earbuds have to be inserted firmly (even deeply) into the ear canal. Some people will not find this comfortable, and should stay with over-the-ear headphones or iPod style in-ear earphones that don't really have to be firmly in the ear canal for their best sound. Reviews of these earbuds that complain about a tinny sound or a lack of bass are probably from people who did not insert the earbuds firmly enough into the ear canal. Each comes with alternate rubber adaptors in different sizes to make a good fit easier to achieve. All when properly inserted provide some degree of passive noise isolation, which is nice for airplanes and other noisy enviroments.
Since these earbuds do have to be firmly inserted in the ear canal, ear wax, believe it or not, can be a real problem. If the sound suddenly deteriorates in one earbud or the other, ear wax clogging the earbud is a good first guess as to what went wrong. One earphone company makes ear wax screens (5 pair for $10), but I haven't tried them.
The Griffin EarThump Earphones (Black) emphasize bass, and too much for my taste. The bass booms, and as a result, the music seems far away, as if at the far end of long hallway. In terms of fit and comfort, I prefer the design of these earbuds, which have an L-shaped earpiece. It's hard to explain but the handle of the L made it easier for me to get the earphones properly set in ear, and the overall result was more comfortable (for me anyway), than with the earpieces that only had a "bud" and no handle. The earpiece internal design into the ear is a hollow tube, and as a result, probably easier than some to clean out (if needed).
The JBuds Hi-Fi Noise-Reducing Ear Buds (Black) were my overall favorite for sound and comfort. The sound is very pleasing, a good balance throughout the spectrum. The earbuds had the L shape and resemble the Griffins in design, and so were easy to insert and get a good fit. When I bought them they were under $10 and by far the cheapest of the ones I tried, but as I write this the price seems to have shot up and they are now more than twice as expensive. If I had it to do over again, I would just buy 4 sets of these. At this price point (even as increased), I doubt there are any much better.
The Creative Labs Noise Isolating Earphones (51MZ0085AA004) had perhaps the best pure sound, with an amazingly clear treble and a good balance. The earbuds have only the bud and so I found them a little harder to insert properly and a bit less comfortable than the Griffin and the JBuds. The earpiece internal design ends in a metal mesh leading into the ear canal, and how to get ear wax out of that mesh if (when) necessary is a real puzzle. Unbelievably the price of these (about $15 when I bought) appears to have more than doubled; but for pure sound these are excellent.
I had high hopes for the Sennheiser CX300-B Earbuds (Black), which were the most expensive ones I bought - about $10 more than the Griffins. The sound and the design both reminded me of the Creative Labs (right down to the mesh design, and the earbud only construction), but I liked them much less. First the bass was too pronounced for my taste, although they shared the great Creative treble. Second, the cord leading to the earpieces is "unbalanced". Much longer leading to one ear than the other. I suppose this makes sense if you connecting them to an iPOD on one side of your belt or in a pocket, so that one ear is farther from the music player than the other. If I tried to use them at my desk computer, the earbud with the shorter cord was constantly pulling out of my ear.
In summary, I would rank them (1) JBuds, (2) Creative, (3) Griffin, and (4) Sennheiser.
