Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of JBL Duet II High Performance Speaker System for Portable Music and PC - Black/Silver (Pair)Customer Review: Great desktop listening. Summary: 5 Stars
I'm testing these speakers against a variety of others to find a decent pair of desktop speakers to listen to while I work out of the home office. In this environment, I mostly listen to jazz, blues and classical, some vocalists like Bonnie Raitt. Right now I'm listening to the Wynton Marsalis station I created on Pandora (one of my favorites) and these Duet II's sound great. My wife commented about too much bass from these speakers.
Harmon Kardon Soundsticks
I tried these against a 2.1 HK Soundsticks set-up and have to say the soundsticks had very muddy, heavy bass (too much for me). Bass module fired right into the floor and with our hard-wood floors, it just exaggerated the bass too much. It had ok mids and highs, but not accurate and my wife commented about the "suggestive" look to the "sticks". So, no-go on the Soundsticks.
Ord Audio Mod 1
I also tried the Orb Audio Mod 1 with their packaged portable amplifier. Very nice highs and clear mids, but absolutely no bass (felt like I was missing half the music during the upright bass solos) and they sounded hollow to me, no warmth at all. This might change as they get broken in properly with hours and hours of listening. I will try because for the price, they should sound better. I switched out the amp for a PylePro PCA1 and the Orbs sound much better but still a bit lacking in warmth. It may be the more accurate speaker because I am playing this music through the onboard soundcard on my mini laptop which is probably causing this tin-can sound.
JBL N24AWII, Northridge Series
I also tested them against the JBL N24AWII, Northridge series (take up more desktop real estate, but about same height). The N24AWII's have tighter bass, but highs seem to be missing at the upper high range. Mids - voices seem to be hidden in the background on these speakers. I think for a larger space, the Northridge series would do ok, but as near-field desktop listening I'm still leaning towards the Deut II's.
JBL Creature III's
I also liked these speakers, have the bass module firing into the floor but you can easily adjust the bass. With bass turned down as much as possible, it helped. But still seemed a bit muddy on the bass, not tight at all, and mid's were non existent. Probably pretty good for hip-hop, top 40 type of music but for piano or vocalists I would stay away.
JBL Duet II's
These Duet II's have enough bass for classical, jazz and rock while keeping some warmth and separation through the midrange. Not as sharp and accurate as the Orb Audio speakers, but for overall musicality I would choose the Duet II's because they give you the big picture with some bass, average mids and good highs. They didn't overpower me with muddy bass, just gave enough to hear the full spectrum of music. They might not be as accurate and transparent as the Orbs, which will bring out the negatives of your sound card or source. For a desktop system I like the Duet II's the best, and they are simple to set up and use.
My conclusion:
For the absolute best sound, I would need to buy the Orb Audio Mod 1 + Pyle Pro PCA1 amp (or something bigger and better) + Subwoofer and possibly a DAC converter = Close to $700 total and lots of equipment around the desk
Or, for very good sound on a variety of music = Duet II's which can be had for less than $100.
