Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Iomega eGo 320 GB USB 2.0/FireWire 400 Portable External Hard Drive 34418 (Jet Black)Customer Review: Nice drive when fixed... Summary: 3 Stars
I already had one of the exact drives when I ordered this to back up all my photos. When this one arrived from the vendor the unit made a rattling sound. Fearing the worst I cracked it open (no difficult feat as two of the screws were already loose) and found a shield inside loose. After tightening it up all was good.
I am a little curious why this unit had brushed metal ends while my other one has chrome???
I don't believe this is the vendors fault. I think it missed quality control at Iomega.
Customer Review: not Bi platform Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this drive because they said that it worked with mac and PC. Instead it works with MAC or PC, not both. If you format it to work with a PC it is only readable on the mac, not writable. In need to go back and forth and that is a disappointment. Otherwise is seems like a very nice drive.
Customer Review: Re-format Summary: 3 Stars
Not Windows XP ready. Product seems to be fine now but I have Windows XP and this had to be reformated to work with it.
Customer Review: Iomega Fan, but this one failed Summary: 2 Stars
I have used Iomega for years. This USB hard drive is convenient and small, but has failed prematurely after less than one year. It should not be continually plugged in due to excess heat. Since this one failed, I have bought 2 of the redesigned 500GB models. So far, So good. They don't seem to have the same heat build-up of the one that failed.
Customer Review: If only there were less than one star... Summary: 1 Stars
This product has been the biggest disappointment ever. I purchased it because my computer hard drive is full. After putting pictures and music on the drive over the course of just a few months, the drive suddenly failed. I had used the drive minimally (plugged in only when transferring data), but after a few months, it just went kaput. I looked on many service forums and this appears to be a fairly common problem for people. The company will send you a refurbished replacement drive but does not do any data recovery or attempt any kind of repairs. So, you lose all your data and then pay for them to ship you a used drive. The warranty coverage continues on the new (old) drive, but of course, unless I buy a second drive, there is no point in putting any data on the new drive since the possibility of all data being lost again exists. The data recovery company that works with Iomega told me the average price range for data recovery through them is $700 to $2900. Iomega support kindly urges you to consider local recovery options when you speak to them. After speaking to an "escalation specialist" (the person who speaks to you when you complain loudly enough), Iomega expressed its willingness to pay for my shipping both ways, but was unable to consider evaluating the drive for any problems beyond sending me a new power cord or replacing the drive.
