Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Iomega DVR Expander Drive, eSATA, 500GB - 34172Customer Review: Seamless extra storage Summary: 5 Stars
The Iomega DVR Expander provides a simple way to expand the limited HD storage capabilities of Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 HD DVRs.
Installation is simple: disconnect the DVR power, connect the expander drive to the DVR via the supplied eSATA cable, provide a constant power source to the expander drive, reconnect power to the DVR and wait for it to boot, power-on the DVR and your display, and then follow the on-screen prompts to format the drive to your DVR.
The entire process took less than 10 minutes from start to finish. I had only 2 1/2 hours of HD content along with 1 hour of SDTV content stored on the DVR before installing the expander. 13% of the storage capacity was consumed. After installing the expander drive, only 3% of the storage capacity was in use.
There is no way to know which drive is storing new content, nor is there an indicator light to signal disk access. A blue pilot light does show constantly. Instructions indicate that the DVR controls storage location, with programming stored on the drive with the greatest amount of remaining capacity. I take that to mean that the external drive stores new recordings.
The DVR operates exactly as it did prior to installation of the expander drive. As said in the title, it's seamless.
Unlike another reviewer, I can use the one-hour buffer for programs that I watch without recording. I can rewind, pause, and fast-forward as before.
What's not to like? The DVR maintains full functionality and program storage is now adequate for keeping several HD programs until they can be watched. The price is right, and Amazon provided their usual fine service.
My only regret is that the drive can't be moved from one DVR to another in order to watch recorded programs. (I have two DVRs in my home.) This is a Scientific Atlanta or Time Warner issue. Any expander drive behaves in the same manner. Now that I know that these expander drives work exactly as they should, it's time to order one for the second DVR!
