Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Intel PWLA8391GT PRO/1000 GT PCI Network AdapterCustomer Review: Another great Intel Product Summary: 5 Stars
I'm fairly technical, and I tend to work with standard products that I know are reliable. Intel is one of the brands that I never have to worry about, whether it's an Intel motherboard or an Intel network adapter.
In this case, I had three of my systems being operated and maintained at an off-site facility, and I brought them back into my own facility. Some one of the maintenance guys at the off-site facility had swapped out my Intel adapter for a NetGear adapter on one of the systems (I have no idea why), and I didn't immediately notice the change. After having a tough time getting my system, high speed cable network, and DIR-655 router working together, I narrowed the problem to the system's network adapter.
I purchased the Intel PWLA8391GT from Amazon at a good price, received it in a timely fashion, and after installing it on my troubled system, everything worked well.
Intel makes good products. This is one of them.
Customer Review: works great if you plug it in all the way! Summary: 5 Stars
Works perfectly on my Dell Dimension 9100, Intel Pentium 4 Processor 630, running Windows XP. Plug and play... once I plugged the card in all the way ;-) !!! Needed to replace a faulty OEM integrated ethernet port when I upgraded to FIOS router. Was getting by on a USB connection with old DSL modem.
Being a technonumnutz I was willing to pay a premium to minimize hastle, and I needed a card that would work 32 or 64 bit since I was not certain which I had. I share my particular challenges for anyone as incompetent as myself:
first had to remove an unused fax card to open up a slot
second failed to plug in the card all the way. I mention this because the system diagnostics showed the card working fine, but interestingly listed it as a different card! After nothing else worked I took the cover off and reinserted the card again. Problem solved.
Customer Review: Great gigabit card Summary: 5 Stars
I got this NIC around the holidays because one of my desktop's onboard NIC was acting funny. So I purchased a few, and after I installed it into my desktops, it worked immediately. The computers are all dual boot workstations with Windows XP Pro and Kubuntu 7.04, and all computers worked with both OSs right away. However, I chose to install current drivers to get full access. It works well with my gigabit switch, where the limitation is due only to other computers with 10/100 NIC. Because I am used to comps with 10/100 cards, I see a significant difference in transfer rate between computers with this card installed!
Pros: Great performance, ease of installation, supports a great variety of operating systems, support for Gigabit.
Cons: Could be cheaper.
Customer Review: Gigabit is superb Summary: 5 Stars
Intel Pro 1000 desktop adapters work with Linux straight out of the box. You plug it in the PCI card slot inside the computer case and it will automatically be recognized by the Linux Kernel on boot, and configured as eth0. On the downside, with Microsoft Windows XP you need to install drivers. I wasn't surprised when I had to change my router (switch) to be gigabit compatible, and all the other machines needed gigabit cards, which they all had already, to get a gigabit network. Gigabit is 1000 base T, or ten times the speed of 100 base T, the current world standard. Intel makes great equipment, and most of it works with Linux. I don't endorse any operating systems, as this is a personal preference. I only think people should know the truth.
Customer Review: Intel PWLA8391GT PRO/1000 GT PCI Network Adapter Summary: 5 Stars
I recently upgraded my multi-computer, multi-platform system from 10/100 to 10/100/1000 and needed new ethernet card for all of my computers. I found on Amazon the Intel PWLA8391GT PRO/1000 GT PCI Network Adapter. I was happy because I know intel products usually work out-of-the-box for any os system. When I got the product I found not only the ethernet cards but driver cds in addition. I slipped each card into my computers and as I thought no problems. No need for the provided cds either, Windows Vista easily downloaded drivers and I was on the net in minutes. Also my Linux boxes had no problems with drivers. All machines where up an running without a hitch. Great product!
