I am giving INSTEON dimmers/switches highest mark for reliability, versatility, ease of installation (before you buy, though, make sure you have neutral wire to the location where you would be installing the INSTEON device), and reliable customer support.
INSTEON ICON Dimmer Switch(s) is the way to start your home automation project (at least in my opinion). Based on my research INSTEON products are the most cost effective and reliable products on the US market now( excluding x10 products which are plagued by reliability issues). At $20-$45 those dimmers are cheaper than most non remote controlled dimmers sold by Home Depot, Lowes and other home improvement chains.
I installed INSTEON dimmers throughout my house almost 1 year ago and have had no problems since. They are relatively easy to program, no hassle to operate, and very flexible in terms of functionality. You could create 2-way, 3-way and so on set ups without additional wiring in seconds. With an optional pc adapter any INSTEON device can be controlled and programmed from your pc or over the internet.
Another plus is INSTEON's backward compatibility with X10, which expands on the list of home automation devices, which can control those dimmers/switches and all INSTEON products.
