Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of IOGear Mobile Digital Scribe GPEN200N (Black)

Customer Review: Fragile and poor execution
Summary: 2 Stars

This cost me $65 and shipped with dead batteries for the pen, which cost me a further $10 to replace.

The setup is not intuitive. Even simply turning it on provided a problem. I thought it had failed to charge enough for mobile operation, until I discovered that you have to hold the button down for several seconds.

As another reviewer observed, the tiny clips are worthless on a pad of paper unless you turn the pad upside down, the left clip is useless in a notebook for the right page (if you are right handed) and the right clip is useless on the facing page (if you are left handed) so you either switch from preferred to clumsy and back with each page or use the center mount. The center mount is floppy on a notebook. In addition, the tiny axle for the clips is supremely fragile and mine broke the first day.

It looks like a great idea if they can get the price down, make it easier to get started, ship with good batteries or provide a way to know why it isn't working, improve the durability, and make a clip that works on a pad.

Customer Review: An okay product, but for productivity not so good
Summary: 2 Stars

The pen has very low resolution, so anything smaller than one centimeter in diameter would not be clear. The mouse mode is not accurate. The fine control that you may expect from an analog pen, is unjustified by the lack of resolution in the system. So your fine writing and drawing would convert into a choppy set of choppy lines.

The system hangs up sometimes, but reset button works, so that's alright.

If you install the driver on a machine (I had Windows XP) with a tablet, it will screw the drivers for the tablet for good, and the tablet pressure sensitivity would not work. Even uninstalling the driver does not fix the problem.

Lack of resolution and bad drivers make it an unacceptable utility device.

Customer Review: So-so device...Save your money
Summary: 2 Stars

I was definitely not impressed with this electronic scribe. I had hoped I could use it while out on job sites, but it only keeps it's charge for about two hours. Also, the receiver unit must stay in a fixed location all the time. If it moves at all, your writing and drawings don't come out right.

If you manage to keep the receiver in exactly the same spot, it actually does a decent job of capturing your drawings. Also, the "mouse" function is kind of neat...allowing you to use it like a mouse.

Overall, I would recommend going with a graphics tablet instead of this device.

Customer Review: A good idea but not ready for real world use
Summary: 2 Stars

This is a great idea that just didn't pan out. Technically, the device works fine -- your handwriting and drawings are very accurately recorded. The problem lies in the mechanics of placing the device when writing. Small, spring-loaded clips allow you to attach it to one or two sheets but do not allow you to attach it to a pad of paper. Unless you plan on writing on a single sheet, forget it. Designers need to adapt for use in the real world and add a clip that will allow it to be attached to a pad of paper.

Customer Review: doesn't transport into any other program like onenote
Summary: 2 Stars

Only will import data to included program, otherwise must have dongle attached for imput into such programs like Onenote (another thing to attach to the notebook?). Can copy and paste from the program but this is another 3 steps. Tech support was frustrating and never returned the calls though it was touted as a version to work with oneNote I wanted to know if an import api was in the works. It may fit your needs but I was looking to eliminate clutter / additional programs and carrying more stuff to meetings.
