Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of IOGear 3-Port HDMI Switch with Remote GHDMIS3 (Black)Customer Review: Excelent quality through HDMI - DVI connection and a PS3 Summary: 5 Stars
So I just picked up a new PS3 Slim-120, its my first new game system since my original Xbox. I dont have a new TV, its a Samsung 52 inch rear screen projection HDTV. I bought it in early 2006, and it only has one single DVI input. I have had my HD DVR cable box hooked up with a HDMI to DVI converter cable, and it has worked great for years.
My main problem was that I wanted to get a full 1080i HD quality picture when playing my new PS3, I mean thats kinda the point. So I did some research and found this HDMI switch, and I liked what it has to offer.
PROS:
- Has DVI backward compatability to connect newer HDMI devices to an older DVI TV. (Much older than mine actually.)
- works with 1080p when I upgrade my TV I can still use it for more devices in the future.
- really easy to use, just plug it in and turn on your devices.
- I could not see any video degredeation while using this. But keep in mind, on a better and much newer HDTV you may see something different.
- Small and inconspicuous. You can just sit this thing on a shelf, on top of your DVR, DVD, or anything really. Its so small, and you really only notice it because of the LED indicator lights. But, make sure the remote has a direct line of sight so the IR remote will work.
CONS:
- Remote feels very flimsy and fragile.
- Lack of included power supply. The device has a power supply port, but doesnt come with one.
- LEDs are always on. Not really a big deal, but it would be nice if they would turn off when all the devices that are connected to it are powered off.
The other issue with DVI is that it doesnt transmit audio, the audio is run through regular RCA audio cables. I was worried that the PS3 would not be able to accomdate this, but you can have the video output set on HDMI and the audio output set to the supplied AV cables. So then I had the delema of only one audio input for the DVI input on the TV. This meant that I needed to get another switch that would be dedicated to the audio.
So I picked up a Sima SVS-14 4 Input Manual A/V Selector, also available here on Amazon. I was able to hook my audio through this and everything works great. The only pitfall is that when I need to switch the audio, I have to manually flip a switch on the device. No big deal really because it works great.
I am very happy with the HDMI switch, and the fact that using it in conjuction with an AV switch for my audio can give me a 1080i HD picture on my DVI input is a great thing.
