This Tek Pal Large Button TV Remote Control by Hy-Tek, is the best thing to happen to my 91 year old mother since sliced bread. She has mild dementia and many of the multi-function multi-button remotes just frustrate her to pieces. When I visited her sometimes the TV's volume would be so loud I would wonder how she could stand it, but she couldn't deal with the remote. This remote is simple. Up/down volume, Up/down channel, Off/On, Mute. One complaint, the mute button really doesn't cut the sound, it just lowers the volume. But perhaps it is how her TV is responding to the command? In any event, it doesn't matter cause she doesn't mute it. I am the one that usually uses that function. This remote also has a lighted keypad. She has commented that it is so easy to read too. The best $13(plus shipping) I have spent. She is happy to be in control of her TV viewing destiny again. We ordered this product for my 90 year old Grandmother. Her previous remote control had too many buttons. She had problems getting to the correct channel, turning the TV on and off, changing volume, etc. She would mistakingly hit the wrong button and change the settings on the TV, in which case she would have to wait for a family member to correct the problem. VERY frustrating for her. With the Tek Pal Large Button remote control, she has only the buttons she needs! For her, it is very easy to use. And we programmed the TV, eliminating the channels she does not use, so that she can surf only the channels she enjoys. The Tek Pal remote has dramatically improved her quality of life by relieving a ton of remote control operating frustration. My Nana calls it her "White Magic Charm". She is thrilled with it and tells everyone she knows about it! I highly recommend this product! I had been looking for a simple remote control for my mother who has dementia. The cable company remote control is much too cluttered with buttons for her to comprehend in her condition. Having to turn on the cable box and then the TV...it was too much for her and she really struggled. I had been looking for a remote for her with big and simple buttons and this one was perfect. The only drawback is that it doesn't work with the cable box. In a perfect world, this remote would turn the cable box AND the TV on and off with just the on/off button. For my mother with dementia though, even just a few channels would be fine, so I removed the cable box and plugged the cable wire directly into the back of the TV - she just uses the remote with the TV. It's absolutely wonderful! She never used the cable guide button or anything like that anyways, so she's not missing out on anything. The back-lit buttons are great too! Bought this for an elderly Aunt for whom I just purchased a new flat screen TV. My Aunt has the expected arthritic hands and trying to operate the remote that came with the set was proving to be more than she could handle. All she wanted to do was turn the TV off & on, mute it, adjust the volume and go up and down with the chanel changer. This remote seemed to fit the bill and for ten bucks if it didn't work I'm sure it would have made a damn fime door stop. However unlike other universal remotes this baby worked and worked well ! Easy to program, use and met the need as the elderly like to move up and down the channel selections. The large buttons gave her control and saved me many trips to the assisted living home to reset the TV. I highly reccommend this remote for anyone with elderly relatives. A very pleasant feature on this unit is that pressing the mute button once cuts the TV volume in half and pressing it twice kills the sound.Customer Review: Does exactly what it's made to do

An elderly relative was moving into an assisted-living place and we got her a smallish flat-panel tv. We knew she would be unable to deal with the multiple-small-buttons remote that came with the tv, so we got this remote at the same time, and it is absolutely perfect for her situation
I'm not sure if this remote can control a cable box at all. But even if it can, it can't ALSO turn the tv on and off. We got around this by buying an amplified indoor antenna (the square kind that lies flat, about 1/2 inch high) and kept our fingers crossed that it would pull in enough channels. It did! The HD channels come in perfectly, the non-hd, not so good. So I programed the tv to only show the HD channels that it received. When my elderly relative clicks the "channel up" button, she gets a succession of perfect high-def stations and nothing else. Best of all... no cable fees!
