Within a few minutes I was able to access my hard drive from a non-bootable computer and recover the My Documents folder onto a new external backup drive. Later I will try it on my other pcs from my laptop graveyard (under my bed). I have pictures and data that I have not been able to retrieve through inability to start the computer and lack of knowledge about how else to get to it. IT IS EASY!!!!!
My limited understanding (from my brother) is that there are usually two types of hard drives - a SATA or an IDE. I think they have two different pin setups, so it is important to know what kind you have. I looked up my computer type on the Lenovo website, and was able to see from there that it was a SATA. (He was talking to me about my Lenovo laptop, so for all I know there may be more types.)
I got this item overnight, and within an hour (maybe 5 minutes, but I did a backup which took longer) had access to data that I hadn't seen in several weeks, since my main laptop died. You locate the harddrive (again, use your manufacturer website to look for a diagram if you don't know). This unit comes with a small screwdriver to facilitate removal. For me, I removed the cover from the edge of the computer, pulled a ribbon, and it was out. I was careful to only touch the sides of the unit.
Match up the pin adapters between the case end piece and the harddrive (I ended up not using the protective metal body - it was too snug, and I didn't need it). This give you USB access. Plug the USB into a working computer - and VOILA! Access to your near and dear files! Fantastic!
