Customer Review: Cheap HDTV if you've got a big monitor

I bought a new 1920 X 1080 LCD monitor to replace my aging CRT monitor recently. When I got home I immediately realized it was enormous (it didn't look nearly so big in the store). Next, I noticed that it put my little 12-inch analog TV to shame, so I had to have a tuner card to go with my new monitor.
I was not disappointed one bit. I live near downtown, so all the local transmitters are within 6 miles of home. It gives nearly-perfect reception on all five local stations, although the signal occasionally breaks up into little squares briefly. I receive 12 channels of programming since all the stations multicast their signals. I should say that I'm using an old rabbit ears antenna, which is the worst possible antenna for HDTV reception. An antenna upgrade will clear up my minor reception problem. It also has a separate analog input which is useful for connecting a VCR (or a cable box).
The WINTV-HVR-1800 is actually a discontinued model, so I was shipped the WINTV-HVR-1850 instead. The inputs are different from the picture on the amazon.com website. You can find the correct picture on the Hauppauge website if it matters to you.
The hardware is great, but I found the WINTV 7 software to be horrible. I was never able to get it working properly, either in Vista or Windows 7 RC. However, I've found that the Windows 7 version of Windows Media Center works very well for TV viewing.
One last comment: I ended up buying the WINTV-HVR-1250 to replace this item, because I made the bonehead mistake of not checking the size of the card before ordering it. The HVR-1850 is too big to fit in my computer case; the HVR-1250 is a low-profile card. The HVR-1250 also gets outstanding reception. Oh, well, I can't blame amazon.com for this blunder.
