Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR High Definition Personal Video RecorderCustomer Review: Everything I needed Summary: 5 Stars
Since my wife has filled up our DirecTV HD DVR with movies she already has on DVD, I needed a way to pull HD content out and archive it. This device fit the bill. However, for a while there, I was so disappointed in the apparent audio sync issues that I almost returned it. Good thing I didn't as it wasn't this device's fault.
The files are saved as M2TS H.264 files, and my AMD Phenom X3 8650 based system seemingly couldn't play the files without serious audio sync issues. After replacing my Vista 64 installation with Vista 32, I was still having the audio sync problem.
Well, it turns out that my problem was that I was using Media Player Classic and VLC to play the M2TS files. They apparently don't take advantage of the ATI hardware based H.264 decoder. After installing a trial version of Cyberlink PowerDVD, I found out that all of the recorded files play great. Low CPU utilization, and absolutely no sync issues. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: Hauppauge 1212 + PS3 = YouTube Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this mostly for the ability to capture decent video for PS3 game plays, but like that I can use it for TV. It is kinda expensive to buy one for just this reason when my captures will be uploaded to @YouTube, but it's a fun addition for when you want or need to capture video to share. While this item won't be for just anyone since it's not the most user friendly and cost effective item you've purchased, but I got it to work with no major hassles since I'm a techy person anyway, judging from other replies complaining of it ease of use, or lack thereof. Keep in mind, there isn't a hard drive built-in, so you'd need a PC to capture to; I have both a MacBook Pro and a Windows 7 netbook, however chose to use the netbook to capture the files since the supplied software was for PC vs. $30 3rd party software for Mac.
Video quality? Judge for yourself with my first video captured with the Hauppauge HD PVR (edited in iMovie): [...]
Customer Review: Exceeded expectations! Summary: 5 Stars
Some reviews read here almost turned me away. I'm glad I realized they were dated, and based on my satisfaction with other Hauppage products, ordered it. It arrived about a week ago, and I've been "crashing and bashing" it and the ArcSoft and Titan TV "hooks" to the hardware. It does everything promised, a little bit better than promised.
The included remote control is useless, but I expected to put it into the same drawer with dozens of other remote controls that don't matter when working with a computer monitor, rather than a large HD TV. By the time I can afford a 90" HDTV monitor for my computer, I imagine Hauggage will have theirs working.
I have to get up very early, so usually can't stay up late to watch the good shows on TV. I use this for "time shifting" more than anything else. It's nice to be able to watch last night's show in Hi-Def.
Customer Review: Best used for video capture instead of as a DVR Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this to capture video from my game consoles (Xbox 360 and PS3) in HD. It works perfectly in that role, but seems to lack features that would make it a really useful DVR for recording TV programs.
A couple things to remember:
1) It only supports up to 1080i resolutions, so if you are used to watching in 1080p, you'll have to learn to deal with a lower resolution (I recommend 720p over 1080i, personally).
2) It hardware encodes to h.264 before it reaches your PC, so you won't get a true, uncompressed HD recording. This does reduce file size significantly though, so you'll get files that are smaller than raw AVI files at SD resolutions.
I would recommend this to anyone who wants to capture video to their PC for online posting or DVD authoring purposes, but probably not as a standalone DVR solution.
Customer Review: You Can't Go Wrong Summary: 5 Stars
If you're planning on capturing your gaming from PS3 or Xbox 360, you can't go wrong. This is probably the absolute best capture card you can buy right now. For clarification, you MUST be using a HDTV for this to record in HD. If you play on standard TV or anything worse than that, DO NOT get this. This device will not convert standard definition into HD. Another plus side to this is, the quality on your TV will not be effected. What's so special about this device is that it allows you to play in HD while recording in HD, something not many capture cards can do (Dazzle). So if you want high quality sound and video for your montages and videos, this it what you need to get. The price is a bit steep, but it is way worth the cost.
