I'm surprised to see a few dissatisfied reviewers. I, like other reviewers who love this device, am only using it to capture footage from video games consoles. I don't have much to add that hasn't been said elsewhere. I love that the device has AV and S-video inputs for older consoles, but I really got it for the HD component input. I play on the TV since like another reviewer said, there is a 2-3 second delay in the display in the capture software, but this works just fine as I keep a TV right near the PC. The software is easy to use, though I agree, you really want to keep the CD for this software! I don't think it can be downloaded if lost and it's value is close to that of the entire device. It works great in Windows 7 32-bit AND 64-bit, though you want the latest drivers. I've come to just rely and depend on this working so well every time that I have no worries about grabbing great audio/video. I've owned this for a little less than 2-years, it stays on all the time and hasn't been any trouble. This was well worth the money and I just couldn't be happier with it.Customer Review: Great for capturing PS3 and XBox 360 video!

I work for a small online video game website. We wanted to get into capturing video for reviews, tips, etc. After trying several devices to attempt to capture HD video for the XBox 360 and PS3 unsuccessfully I had almost given up hope that there was a product that worked and was user friendly (stay far away from BlitzCast). Thankfully the Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR High Definition Personal Video Recorder was the answer to my problems. Now capturing videos in HD with proper component cables is simple. The software that Hauppauge packs in works very well. This box is HIGH QUALITY and WELL MADE! We also tried recording off of digital cable and while a bit more difficult, it works well for that too (though you really need a blu-ray burner to take full advantage of this).
If you're looking to capture video for your XBox 360 or PS3 this is the device to do it with! It works great and is (overall) very user friendly. If you're looking to record HD video from your DVR it works great for that too. HIGHLY recommended!
Customer Review: A way to reencode from analog HD outputs

There have been many times over the past few years that I wished I had the ability to permanently save high definition programs stored on my HD DVR. But thanks to Hollywood's piracy paranoia, many HD DVRs lack the ability to permanently archive stored HD programs.
The Hauppage offers a way around this limitation by making it possible to take the component video outputs from a DVR or HD tuner (satellite, cable, or OTA) and redigitize them. The resulting file can be viewed on a PC or can be burned to DVD in a format that is compatible with many Blu Ray players.
The good news is that this product works as advertised, with the included software installing quickly on my PC. Recording a program with this device is simple as can be, and the software for burning a Blu Ray compatible disk (in the AVC-HD format) is simple to use.
Highly recommended for anyone who needs the capability to permanently archive HD programs off a tuner or DVR that has component video outputs.

It was totally plug-n-play right out of the box using the supplied Arcsoft TotalMedia Extreme software and (in my case) two 16 foot USB certified active extension cables to an i7 920/8 core PC. Video capture is simple. However, after having the unit for a month, I'm still learning and researching what to do with a 1 hour 1080i video capture that's roughly 4 Gigs since there is no hardware provision to "dumb down" the video from 1080i to 720p. The alternative is software conversion, and that introduces a quality loss. If all you need is DVD playback the Arcsoft software will create it and write the video to disk at Standard Definition resolution, but if you have an xBox or PS3 you can write your video in High Definition to a standard DVD and playback on either xBox or PS3.
Aside from the post-processing decisions I need to make, setup and operation of the unit was very simple, there was no need to open the computer box for installation, and the video quality is great.

The Haupaugge HD PVR is such a good capture card for the Xbox 360. Though Dazzle is cheaper, Dazzle's ability to record in good enough quality is limited. If you have a good enough computer to watch and edit HD videos, and you're up for spending $100> for a capture card, the HD PVR is a good choice. So far, I've been recording footage at the most at around 2 hours length, and there is no drop in frames in the videos. The capture card comes with a disc that lets you convert the raw .mp4 files that come from recording Xbox footage into a more workable .wmv format (the actual program's name is ArcSoft MediaConverter).
In all, if you have a good enough computer (you need one to convert the .mp4 formats and edit those videos as well) with enough space in the hard drive (a 2 hour .mp4 file will be about 50 GB wmv file when converted) and with spare cash, I recommend this product. Though I'm not tech-savvy, this product is very simple, and everything is laid out for the buyer!
