Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR High Definition Personal Video RecorderCustomer Review: Works great with PS3! Summary: 5 Stars
This is review is for those who want to use this to record their gameplay on the PS3. I found this product easy to use. The quick start directions are easy to follow. Setup was a breeze. You will have to purchase the PS3 component AV cables if you are using an HDMI cable to connect your PS3 to your TV. It's as simple as connecting the PS3 AV cables to the HD-PVR and then connecting the AV cables that come with the HD-PVR to the TV. You then connect the HD-PVR to your computer with the USB cables. That's it. I was expecting at least some problems after reading a few of the negative reviews here, but I haven't had one yet. The included software is also easy to use. You have three formats that you can record in. I use MP4 which is listed as XBOX because I can upload these directly to YouTube in HD. I haven't played around with video editors very much so I don't know which format is easiest for that.
PROS:
Easy to use and setup
HD gameplay Videos (1280 x 720)
CONS:
You have to use AV component cables instead of HDMI
EDIT 1: I used it to copy my father-in-law's old home videos. He's been worried that the tapes won't last much longer. My wife and I are going to give him the DVDs and files for Father's day. It worked very well most of the time. The oldest movie had spots where it didn't record well, but I'm not sure that there is much to do for that.

I use my Hauppauge HD-PVR to record TV from my Comcast HD cable box. I record using the 9.0MB bit rate (out of 13MB) and the video, which I watch on a Sony 55 inch flat screen, is quite beautiful. I also have no complains about the audio, but I have a very basic audio set-up. Its very easy to burn recordings to DVD-R, but I find the editing software needs finer adjustment capabilities. In other words when you drop in an edit point, it's never exactly where you think it is. I've also discovered if you mess up the placement of an edit point, and you try to fix it, it sends the audio out of sinc.
I could not get the IR blaster to work at all.
The top of the recorder does get warm, but I've been using the machine constantly for a few weeks and so far no problems.
Sometimes when I change channels with my cable remote, their is a three second delay, during which time the tv screen displays "no signal".
It was easy to set up the HD-PVR near my TV. The USB connection to my computer was a different story. I ended up drilling a hole in the floor behind my computer desk, and another hole in the floor behind my TV stand. I bought a fifteen foot USB cable and ran it from my computer, down the hole, through my basement, and to the recorder.
Dispite the few gliches, I'm happy with my HD-PVR.
Customer Review: Awesome video straight to the computer Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this because I wanted to be able to record video directly from my PS3. I read a lot of reviews and was pretty hesitant about buying this, but eventually decided to try it out. Once I did, I couldn't be happier. However, like many of the other reviews have said, be sure to avoid M2TS and TS video output. MP4 is the way to go with this one. I choose the Xbox360 mode to get MP4 videos, and it works fine with the PS3 I have connected to it. The converter that comes with the software actually tends to corrupt the videos slightly to the point that it can't be read by programs like Sony Vegas - then again, Vegas is a bit touchy. Could just be the software I work with.
Main issue I had with this thing is the fact that the sound is desynced from the PS3 making it awkward if you want to listen to it through headphones jacked into your computer. I like to record voice during, and I don't want feedback from the TV which is where this thing fails me a bit. However, I managed to mute the sound from this thing so I could record using a separate device that passed the audio through without any loss of sync. Works pretty well with the added device, but definitely not the most desirable setup. Something to think about if you intend to record voice while using this device, and you want to avoid feedback.
Otherwise, this thing is awesome!
Customer Review: The best "tool" to hit the market... ever! Summary: 5 Stars
This device with a little creativity is nothing short of the most powerful piece of stereo gear on the planet! I use a MacBook Pro at the living room's HDTV to connect to the Hauppage DVR and run "EyeTV" software (which will control the DVR better than their own software). I take both the cable box and AppleTV's 5 RCA plugs and and put them into an IR controlled switchbox. The signal that is "hot" (selected input device) then goes to the Hauppauge DVR. The DVI output of the Mac with an optical audio cable goes to a DVI/Audio to HDMI converter. This then goes into a 1 of 4 HDMI selector (the other HDMI inputs are BluRay, Cable, AppleTV, Computer and Gaming Device. The output of this HDMI selector goes to an HDMI spitter that feeds the main 55" DTV in the living room AND a smaller HDTV in the bedroom. Both signals are the same for watching late night in bed. (Wireless IR connects the identical same Universal Remote Controllers). Anyway, the point being you can now record Pay Per View movies without encryption for you personal enjoyment on your schedule because the Hauppauge device lets you burn the image to a regular DVD disc for safe keeping and playback on demand. A BluRay player is required to do this. Bite the bullet because BluRay will become the only DVD player in a few years time. If you have any questions, email me at "frankyg123@comcast.net".
Customer Review: Excellent for recording High Definition video (and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio) from ANY source Summary: 5 Stars
This product does exactly what it says it does: I can record HD (or SD) video using component (or composite or s-video) up to 1080p straight to my hardrive. Audio is captured using either stereo analog inputs or the optical input for Dolby Digital. I can then view the file using the included Arcsoft software, Windows Media player, etc. The recorded picture is exactly the same as the original; I can detect no degradation if high bit rates are used.
The included TV scheduler works fine too. I use the "record" function on my cable box rather than the IR blaster, though. This assures the correct channel is selected and prevents someone else from inadvertently changing the channel during a recording.
It records fine using my dual core 16 GHz laptop. However, since the Hauppauge encodes the h.264 files on the fly, they are quite large and I need a faster computer than this to watch the original videos. But, if I further process them, even retaining the original 1080p resolution, the files play fine on this computer. Processing is very time consuming though, so I got a WD TV HD Media player. The WD plays the original, full resolution files fine.
So, this is a great product, and combined with the WD TV HD Media player, I have a complete package to capture and watch HD TV from any source.
