Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Griffin 1100-PWRMTS PowerMate/USB Multimedia Controller and Input DeviceCustomer Review: Excellent product, hands down. Summary: 5 Stars
I feel that many people who had a problem with this neat little device hadn't spent much time trying to get it to work, or were trying to use it in ways it was not intended for. Yes, it looks cool on a desk, yes it controls volume, but it can do so much more than that. I myself have this set up for use based on the active window, and it currently works with the Zune media player, Pandora One, Microsoft Word, Notepad, Mozilla Firefox, GIMP 2, and Ventrilo; it can be set up for use with many more if you show a little patience. The ability to set knob use to trigger keypresses allows this to be done easily, as long as one is aware that keyboard shortcuts are available for their program. So, on to the grading.
APPEARANCE: 5/5
The brushed steel finish is durable and classy looking, and the knob it easy to grip and manipulate, even with sweaty hands. The dynamic glow is pleasant and often handy, but if it's not your thing, you can adjust it/turn it off/set it to pulse under the configuration menu. I personally with the cord were black rather than silver, but that's simply a matter of personal preference, not a dealbreaker in any way.
CONSTRUCTION:5/5
Solid, to say the least. The heft and rubber base help ensure that it does not move during use, and the materials have proven to be very resilient. The USB plug is a bit hard to remove if you have large hands like I do, but roughing up the underside of the plastic plug with a little sandpaper will remedy that easily, and is not visible.
INSTALLATION: 4/5
Plug and go, for the most part. I was not required to update driver software, nor did I experience any problems setting it up. The most grueling part of installation is figuring out which keystrokes/actions you want performed in each program, but again, it's easy with a little patience.
USE: 5/5
Simple and easy, but versitile. As an example, I'll list my Pandora One configuration.
Knob Clockwise: Increase program volume using (UP) keystroke
Knob Counterclockwise: Decrease program volume using (DOWN) keystroke
Depress & Clockwise: Thumbs up a song using (SHIFT +) keystroke
Depress & Counterclockwise: Thumbs down a song using (-) keystroke
Depress Once: Pause play, using (SPACE) keystroke
Press & Hold: Exit program using (ALT F4) keystroke.
The software by no means came ready to use with Pandora in this way, but with a little experimentation you can implement this for use with most programs. All knob usage works as set without fail; I've never once had to re-enter a command.
OVERALL:
I'd recommend the Griffin Powermate to anyone who needs an aesthetically pleasing multifunction input device. It's well worth the money, and the device support is excellent. Griffin is a company that responds very well to their customers, and their products are built to last.
