Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of GlobalSat BU-353 Waterproof USB GPS ReceiverCustomer Review: Thoughts from a truck driver Summary: 5 Stars
I am a over-the-road truck driver and my blue-tooth gps unit started going out on me so I looked around for a replacement. Most of the review were positive and that had me really looking at this inexpensive gps. I like the idea of a usb unit as I had already tried the blue-tooth versions and the batteries just do not last well for me as I drive between 5 to 11 hours a day. I have waited for several weeks after purchase and use to write this review as I wanted to give it a good try. I have drive all around the country during that time and I have been places where the road was next to a mountain cut-out on both sides of the road and still had gps lock the only places that I have lost gps signal was when I went through mountain tunnels but it picks back the signal on the other side within seconds. I would recommend this to anyone even if you are not a truck driver.
Customer Review: GlobalSat BU-353 USB GPS Receiver Summary: 5 Stars
I was looking for a USB powered GPS receiver to use witn my Asus Netbook ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook - 10.5 Hour Battery Lifeand Microsoft Streets and Trips software. I didn't buy the Microsoft one at first because I thought my Garmin eTrex would work - but although it is a great field GPS, it doesn't support NMEA codes that Streets and Trips (and other software packages) require. So, the GlobalSat unit fit the bill. Easy to install with included drivers and it's high sensitivity antenna even picked up enough satellites from inside the building to get a pretty good fix. Terrific. I have yet to use it on a road trip but at least now I'm ready.
Customer Review: Great for windows, good for linux Summary: 5 Stars
Great GPS puck, works fantastic in Windows as far as I can tell, with lots of special programs for it (sirfdemo comes to mind). Works good in Linux as well. Currently using it strictly in a linux installation. Was problematic at first, now works 95% of the time... rarely gpsd gets to be a little bit of a bugger and won't lock onto anything -- telnetting into it tells me it's refusing to get any signal.
sometimes it takes a minute or two to reaquire the location you're at, and it seems to update my navit a TINY bit slow, telling me where i was 5 meters ago, rather than where I currently am, but all GPS' must work this way?
Regardless, it's a great little device and [...] bucks for a 100+ GPS navigation system? Yes! thank you!
Customer Review: The reviews don't lie Summary: 5 Stars
Before purchasing this item, I read all the reviews I could find and decided although it was a little more expensive than the slightly older models, it sounded like exactly what I wanted. I received it quickly, installed the drivers and then plugged it into the windows laptop sitting on the desk on the first floor of my two story house, slight pause and the gps registered the location - on 6 satelites! We took it on a test trip and it accurately registered our speed on the road. The computer went to sleep at one point on the trip, but the gps quickly found us again once the computer "woke up". The entire trip we never had less than 5 or 6 satelites and even had as many as 9. I am totally pleased with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone.
Customer Review: Lucky me picked the right product Summary: 5 Stars
I read some review indicating the technology behind the product may be over-the-hill. I thought GlobalSat ND-100 might be a better choice, but finally decided to use a proven product. I never own other GPS device before, but the experience of using GlobalSat BU-353 in the US is excellent - very sensitive and accurate. Just be patient to wait for less than a minute to get the signal after connection. I'll use it in Europe in the coming days, that'll be the real test.
Buyer beware: My friend bought the ND-100, turn out he got a global version that sends out signal at baud rate 38400. Need to jump over the hoop to convert that back to 4800 to fit the software that uses the US standard.
