Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Genius MousePen 8 x 6-Inch Graphic Tablet for Home and Office

Customer Review: Bang for the Buck !
Summary: 5 Stars

I received the Genius 6 x 8 tablet for Christmas ( which I begged my wife for lol ) I have a lot of inking projects that I'm committed to and also for my art in general . I have previously owned a lower-end Wacom tablet and right now I own a PC with 256mb of RAM!( which I dearly ,dearly thank the LORD for ) Now that being said here's the skinny :
Physically the plastic doesn't feel as thick as the Wacom graphite or as I imagine the bamboo (but its still very good ) but nice and large working space . The included software also allows you to customize the size of your working area within the 6 x 8 of the pad . On the tablet you have 29 "hot cells" which have preset shortcuts or you can customize them to your liking ( cool beans ! )
Now how it actually works :
It does some getting used to but I was very pleasantly surprised how well it works for the price!I haven't used a tablet for many years but after a few days of constant use I started to get the hang of the pen and how I should hold it . I used it in Photoshop CS 3 and Paint Shop Pro X2 and I found for what ever reason whether it was my skill or the lack thereof with the pen ( lol ) that the pen worked better in PS right of the bat than in PSP X2 . But after a few days whether I was getting the hang of it or what , I found the lines improved in PSP X2 . Now for those that are like myself , advanced in using pen and ink but beginners in tablet use I also suggest getting Manga Pro debut or EX and here's why : the Manga studio programs self corrects your lines if their shaky ! Go on to YouTube and check out for yourself the video tutorials owners have posted .
I really really am happy with the tablet and recommend it to anyone above the Wacom "inexpensive " tablets . As an artist on a budget you really can't wrong .

Peace

Customer Review: Perfect starter-tablet for those who want to dabble!
Summary: 5 Stars

It may not be a Wacom, but darn it, this is amazing for the price. I'm a linux user and by following a tutorial at the ubuntu forums, I found installation to be very easy. The tablet mouse is a bit small, but tablet mice in general may always be a tad smaller than a normal mouse, so I can't really complain.

It's got the 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity that any professional tablet has. It doesn't have tilt sensitivity, but I'm guessing the inclusion would have lead to a price higher than what this currently is. The size, for me, is perfect as I'm kinda' used to drawing with small strokes. For someone looking for a 9x12 tablet from Genius, there is one for I think $125 or so, which isn't that bad.

As I said, it may not be a Wacom, but if you or anyone you know has interest in graphic design, do check it out. For fifty bucks, it's an amazing deal. I've had no problems so far and I'll be practicing more once I'm more adept at drawing on paper. In fact, I and anyone in the field of digital art will recommend that you learn drawing skills, whether it be figure drawing, scenery, cartooning, anime, or whatever, first. Then, once you're good at that, make the leap to the digital world.

This is one of the best purchases I've made. I would give this 4 stars since it doesn't have tilt sensitivity, but I'm too happy with this to let a minor quibble get in the way.

Oh, and if you haven't gotten triple-A batteries in a while, start getting some. The stylus and mouse each take one. Also, keep the stylus away from pets =)

For anyone who uses open-source software such as Gimp, Krita, and Inkscape, I highly recommend this.

Customer Review: Wonderful Device
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the best investments I have ever made for my PC. My only regret is that I waited so long to buy a graphic tablet. I hardly use my mouse at all now. Drawing with the pen has become second nature. I use the tablet with TwistedBrush and it works great.

The tablet and pen are very precise and the pressure sensitivity works great. It feels very natural to draw and sketch with the tablet. I find myself spending hours painting at the computer now.

The price is amazing for what it can do. Sure, it is not a Wacom. But it meets all my needs so far. I think everyone should try a tablet out to see what it is like, especially anyone who does graphic work on their computer.

I had a slight hiccup with installation. The tray icon has a checkbox for a tablet PC. It was checked after I installed the tablet. With it checked the tablet would not track. After unchecking the box, the tablet has worked fine.

I cannot imagine trying to draw or paint again with a mouse. The only time I use my mouse now is for gaming. Everything else, from web browsing, painting, to 3D modeling I do with the tablet and pen.

If you are remotely interested in a graphic tablet, try this one out. You may like it so much that you "graduate" to a Wacom. Or, the Genius may be all that you will ever need. So far, it has met and exceeded all my expectations. Couldnt recommend more.

Customer Review: Easy with everything.
Summary: 5 Stars

I was overly pleased when I first plugged this in.
At first, I had no idea what to expect being that this was my first time ever using a tablet, and let me tell you something, installing it was a snap and hassle free, and that's coming from my outdated, 2003 laptop that has never been hooked up to the net.
It's easy, you just run the CD, click one button to install the Tablet, click finish, then install the Stylus. Reboot your computer, plug in your tablet and let the computer regonize the new software, when it does, unplug the tablet and Reboot your computer, after that, plug in the tablet and you're set. And there's no need to install it onto any sort of Paint program, you just open your program as normal and proceed as normal, only this time, you're drawing through your tablet with your stylus. It apperas on your computer screen instead of the tablet by the way. I kept wondering, before having it, if it would show up on the tablet on the computer screen.
It's a little tricky at first and takes some getting use to. I was playing with it for a good thirty minutes before I finally got use to it, but after another thirty minutes I was zipping through my Adobe Photoshop with ease and before I knew it, I had a fairly decent piece of lineart that would have taken me a couple of days to do via mouse. I have yet to color on it, but I know it will be just as easy as when I did my lineart.

Customer Review: Works with Vista
Summary: 5 Stars

I got myself a new Sony laptop Z series for entry level 3D applications, running Vista Business. My 2.5 year old Wacom Intuos2 AND 1 yr old Wacom Biz Tablet which worked fine on XP now refuse to work with this new system. Issues are the now famous Wacom-Vista uncontrollable acceleration and non-responsive configuration panel. So after dozens of frustrating reinstallations and drivers downloads and Vista mazes, I gave the intuos2 to my housemate with a Macbook.

Genius 8x6, in contrast, is predictable; fuss-free driver installation and easy yet detailed (1:1 and relative) pen configuration, and totally well-behaved in my system. In fact, it has better control and feel than the pricier Intuos2. The pen tip feels responsive, the mouse is a tad light for my preference, but does its 3-button mouse job. Works great in Photoshop, no latency/delay, no flicker, I get to sign my name and draw better lines than ever. The top row buttons are bonus, the two side rows buttons will come in handy once I dive deeper into 3D production. My only complaint is it doesn't come with replacement pen tips and the tilt sensitivity isn't as great as Wacom pen.

All in all, for its totally reasonable price, stability and workability with Vista, I'm happy. I highly recommend Genius to Vista users looking for a budget tablet for semi-pro to pro use.
