Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of USB MIDI Cable Converter PC to Music Keyboard Window Win Vista XP, Mac OSCustomer Review: A strong & durable device that works as advertised! Summary: 5 Stars
If you are looking for a way to connect your MIDI Synthesizer to a computer for downloading new sound banks from the internet or you want to try sequencing with a computer, this will work perfectly fine. The cable features a metallic twine coated in clear plastic (durable stuff). There are little LED lights that blink on and off to tell you that the MIDI connection between the keyboard and the computer is set up correctly (another nice feature). I have owned this very model for nearly 2 years and I have experienced absolutely no errors. I use this to transfer new sounds to my old Kawai synthesizer from the late 80's(the Kawai K1m), and it works perfect for that. I have also used this with a Ensoniq SQ-80, and a Yamaha TX7 and it works perfect for those synthesizers as well. If you want to use a computer-based MIDI sequencer like the wonderful (and free) "Seq24", this is ideal!
I would like to point out that although Yamaha sells their own model for $50, and M-Audio has theirs for a little under $40, this generic model does the EXACT same thing. Your computer will not know the difference, only your wallet and ego will. With this cheaper USB/MIDI interface, you can save your money for more necessary music expenses (better FX units, more cables, better mics, etc).
A final note about compatibility, I'm sure 95% of the 1-star reviews are because of this, so please take note:
Windows Vista has trouble recognizing USB-MIDI interfaces, it has no idea what they are or what to do with them. This is a Windows problem and NOT the fault of this device. You can either use Windows XP, Windows 7, an older mac, or if you insist on using Vista, you can go and download the driver software for free. This is an easy fix, but it may take a little work on your part. Search 'google' and you should be able to find everything you need. There are also a hand full of older synthesizers that have problems receiving new banks of sounds through MIDI (Roland Super JX, Roland D-50, etc.) this is also not the fault of this device, but of the badly programed operating system that is inside of the Synthesizer.
This has been the most useful $5 I have spent on my music hobby and the internet provides endless free sound banks for most Synthesizers, I highly recommend this wonderful device!
